BBVA Mexico Announces Board Leadership Transition; Eduardo Osuna to be Proposed as New Chairman

BBVA Mexico announced changes to its leadership on Wednesday, July 29th, including the departure of Jaime Serra Puche from the Chairmanship of the Board of Directors and the proposal for Eduardo Osuna to assume this role. Additionally, the bank announced the appointment of José Luis Elechiguerra as Country Manager and his proposal as Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman of the Board.

, Serra Puche will step down from the Board of Directors after 19 years as a director, serving as chairman for the last eight. During his tenure, Serra Puche led BBVA Mexico’s corporate governance efforts.

As part of the changes, the bank will propose the appointment of Eduardo Osuna as the new chairman to the Board of Directors.

Osuna joined BBVA in 1994 and has held the position of Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the institution since 2015. If his appointment is approved, he will continue to be involved in defining the bank’s strategy in Mexico, the corporate governance of its subsidiaries, institutional relations, and regional boards, in addition to supporting wholesale client relations in a non-executive capacity.

Separately, José Luis Elechiguerra has been appointed Country Manager of BBVA Mexico and will also be proposed to the bank’s corporate bodies as Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman of the Board. He holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

According to BBVA Mexico, Elechiguerra has held various positions within the group since 2008, both in the Mexican market and globally, including Director of Business Transformation, Global Director of Data Governance, Head of Client Solutions at BBVA USA, Global Head of Engineering, and most recently, Head of Global Risk Management.

The institution indicated that these changes are part of the renewal of its governance and management bodies.
