Consumer Confidence Falls in September 2026, INEGI Reports

Consumer confidence in Mexico declined during September 2026, amidst a diminished perception of the

, the country’s situation, and expectations for the coming months.

The Consumer Confidence Index stood at 45.1 points, a decrease of 1.2 points from August and 1.0 point compared to September of the previous year, according to data from INEGI and Banco de México.

The decline affected all five components of the index, reflecting a widespread deterioration during the month. Households’ assessment of their current economic situation fell by 1.9 points to 52.0. Expectations for their economic standing in one year also decreased, settling at 57.6 points.

The perception of the national economy presented a less favorable outlook. The indicator comparing the country’s current situation to that of 12 months ago was 39.0 points, while the expectation for the next year dropped to 44.7. This latter component also registered one of the most significant deteriorations compared to 2025, standing 2.7 points below September of last year.

Lower confidence was also reflected in the possibility of making significant purchases. The index measuring households’ capacity to acquire furniture, televisions, washing machines, or other durable goods reached 32.0 points, half a point less than in August.

Other survey results point in the same direction. The expectation for the employment situation in Mexico over the next 12 months fell to 44.5 points, an annual decrease of 2.8 points. Expected conditions for saving during the next year also diminished, standing at 51.4 points. Meanwhile, economic possibilities for taking vacations were reported at 38.3 points.

Regarding higher-expenditure decisions, the intention to purchase a new or used car within the next two years was 14.9 points. The possibility of buying, building, or remodeling a home reached 18.8 points. Both of these indicators are below the levels recorded in both August and September 2025.

The September 2026 results thus indicate reduced consumer optimism regarding both the current economic situation and the expected performance of variables such as employment, savings, and major purchases.

The National Consumer Confidence Survey is conducted monthly in 2,336 households across the 32 major cities in Mexico. Its objective is to gauge how households perceive their economic situation and that of the country.
