How Much Did Gasoline Prices Drop in Mexico in 2025?
Official data from President Claudia Sheinbaum shows a 1.1% to 4% national decrease in regular gasoline prices in Mexico as of December 2025.
According to official data presented at the People’s Morning Conference by President Claudia Sheinbaum, the price of regular gasoline has registered a nationwide decrease of between 1.1% and 4% since the launch of the National Strategy to Promote Gasoline Price Stabilization, activated on February 27, 2025. Furthermore, the Federal Consumer Prosecutor, Iván Escalante Ruíz, reported that as of December 12, 2025, the national average price per liter of regular gasoline stands at 23.58 pesos. Except for the country’s Southeast, all regions maintain average prices below 24.00 pesos per liter, a threshold that for years served as a critical benchmark for the Mexican energy market. This adjustment, Escalante explained, is not due to a single factor but rather a combination of oversight, agreements with distributors, and constant monitoring by the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO).
How Gasoline Prices Dropped by Region in Mexico
The behavior of fuel prices has not been uniform across the national territory. Variations are attributed to logistical conditions, transportation costs, and the regional structure of the energy market. The reductions registered from February to December 2025 are as follows:
- Southern Region:
- February: $24.80
- December: $23.82
- Decrease: 4%
- Northeastern Region:
- From $24.37 to $23.43
- Reduction of 3.8%
- Western Region:
- From $24.73 to $23.86
- Decline of 3.5%
- Southeastern Region:
- From $24.99 to $24.18
- Decrease of 3.2%
- Northwestern Region:
- From $23.88 to $23.26
- Adjustment of 2.6%
- Northern Region:
- From $23.22 to $22.73
- Reduction of 2.1%
- Central Region:
- From $24.03 to $23.61
- Decline of 1.8%
- Gulf Region:
- From $24.01 to $23.73
- Adjustment of 1.1%
Why Do Gasoline Prices in the Southeast Remain Above 24 Pesos?
The country’s Southeast is the only region where the average price of regular gasoline has not yet fallen below the 24-peso threshold. However, PROFECO clarified that this situation is primarily due to logistical factors, such as higher transportation and distribution costs, and not to widespread abusive practices. Even with these conditions, the region has also shown a significant decrease compared to year-start prices.
Gas Stations with Fair Prices
As part of the weekly monitoring for the “Who’s Who in Fuels” program, PROFECO highlighted both stations maintaining reasonable margins and those excessively inflating their profits. Among the stations noted for offering fair prices are:
- Windstar, Querétaro, Querétaro
- Price per liter: $23.19
- Profit margin: $1.70 In contrast, stations with significantly higher margins were identified:
- Repsol, Córdoba, Veracruz
- Price: $24.09
- Margin: $4.15
- Station in Monterrey, Nuevo León
- Price: $24.99
- Margin: $3.14 Escalante Ruíz reiterated the call for consumers to use the virtual map of service stations, a tool that allows for real-time price comparison and enables more informed purchasing decisions.
