More Water in Calles Dam Provides Certainty for Producers for Upcoming Agricultural Cycles

The Plutarco Elías Calles Dam currently holds six times more water than in 2024, a positive development bringing greater certainty to rural families and new opportunities for tourism and the economy of San José de Gracia. In 2024, it stored approximately 20 million cubic meters of water, and it now holds around 120 million cubic meters, with its water level rising from 11% to 34%.

For the producers in Irrigation District 001, this recovery represents something very significant: having available water to continue production for several agricultural cycles. Federico Ruvalcaba Marín, president of the Association of Users of Irrigation District 001, explained that this resource can be utilized more effectively thanks to the technification of irrigation using drip tape, a system with which nine out of every ten liters of water are currently captured.

“With proper use, the dam will provide us with water for three to four years of cultivation; this was previously unthinkable,” he stated.

However, the benefits extend beyond agriculture. The dam’s recovery is also giving a new boost to San José de Gracia: its landscapes and the Cristo Roto monument are once again more appealing, favoring the arrival of visitors and generating better expectations for merchants and service providers.

For rural families, it means greater certainty to continue producing; for San José de Gracia, it means more visitors and economic activity. Today, seeing the dam with more water again represents hope and new opportunities for the entire region.
