According to a statement issued by the White House, Joe Biden, President of the United States, issued a proclamation under sections 212(f) and 215(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to suspend the entry of aliens who enter the country illegally.
The order will allow immigration officials to quickly remove people without a legal basis and relieve the burden on Border Patrol agents, the US government said.
When will the New Asylum Restrictions Be Applied in the United States?1489
The new measures will be implemented at a time when the southern border is overwhelmed. In this way, immigration officials will be able to quickly expel those who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States.
However, the White House assured that these actions will not be permanent and will be suspended when the number of immigrants who illegally cross decreases enough to allow for safe and effective management of border operations.
On the other hand, the proclamation includes humanitarian exceptions, similar to those provided for in the bipartisan border agreement announced by the United States Senate. These exceptions include unaccompanied children and victims of human trafficking.
What Is Mexico’s Position?2288
On the same day that the White House issued the statement on the new restriction on asylum for immigrants who illegally cross the southern border, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported on a telephone call between the presidents of both countries.
However, there was no relation to the new United States asylum policy. The federal authorities of Mexico have not issued an official pronouncement on this measure either.
On the contrary, the presidents agreed to continue the close collaboration to manage the migratory flows in the region. They also pledged to increase actions to address the structural causes of migration in Latin America and the Caribbean.
