Nuevo León Achieves 75% Reduction in Extreme Poverty: How Social Indicators Improved

, and social welfare, according to results presented by Governor Samuel García during the “Nuevo León Informa” broadcast. During the presentation, held at the Government Palace, García noted that the results are part of a strategy aimed at expanding opportunities for the population through support programs, educational strengthening, access to basic services, and citizen participation.

How Much Did Poverty Decrease in Nuevo León and Which Indicators Improved?

One of the main indicators presented was the evolution of poverty. According to the state government, overall poverty dropped from 25% to 10%, while moderate poverty decreased from 22% to 10%.

Furthermore, the state administration highlighted that 94,000 people moved out of extreme poverty, reducing this indicator from 2% to 0.5%. Concurrently, the population considered non-poor and non-vulnerable increased by 34%, a result the governor attributed to the growth of the middle class.

The state government’s objective is to continue reducing levels of extreme poverty and expand equal opportunities for the population.

Education and Health Strengthen the State’s Social Strategy

In education, Nuevo León emphasized the effectiveness of full-time schools, offering eight-hour days with additional activities such as English, computer skills, and sports.

This model also includes support such as uniforms, backpacks, footwear, and meals. Additionally, it aims to facilitate family organization by providing safe spaces for children while their parents work.

In turn, the governor stated that Nuevo León has the lowest educational backlog in the country and maintains a strategy to strengthen support for individuals with autism and other neurodivergent conditions.

As part of these efforts, he reported that the state is working to register and diagnose 80,000 individuals, in addition to incorporating specialized support such as adapted classrooms and shadow teachers.

In higher education, he highlighted the growth of the Citizen University, an institution that expanded from 3,000 to 30,000 students and plans to launch online doctoral programs.

On the healthcare front, the state government reported that 93% of the population has medical coverage. It also highlighted indicators related to access to health services and life expectancy. Similarly, regarding access to basic housing services, Nuevo León reported that 98.1% of the population has these services, as part of its social welfare advancements.

What Programs is Nuevo León Promoting to Reduce Social Inequalities?

Among its social initiatives, the state government highlighted programs focused on nutrition, support for women experiencing violence, citizen participation, and assistance for vulnerable groups.

One of the mentioned programs was “Ayudamos” (We Help), through which food assistance has been provided to 553,000 people under the “Hambre Cero” (Zero Hunger) strategy.

Additionally, the state reported that 106,000 women are receiving financial and transportation support, while 16,000 individuals with disabilities are participating in assistance programs.

In the cultural sphere, the governor announced that the former Topo Chico Prison site will be transformed into a museum within Libertad Park, featuring areas for children and senior citizens.

Finally, García Sepúlveda underscored the work of the Cabinet for Equality for All Persons and affirmed that the state’s social policy aims to foster development conditions with greater access to services and opportunities for the population.
