What Medical Specialties Are Most in Demand in Mexico?

Consultations for were the most sought after among medical specialties in private establishments in Mexico during 2025. They represented 23.5% of total specialty consultations, according to the Health Statistics in Private Establishments (ESEP) from the INEGI.

Pediatrics followed, with 17.3% of specialized consultations. Internal medicine accounted for 12.4%, while pre- and post-operative consultations represented 9.9%. The remaining specialties grouped 36.9%.

These data allow us to observe which medical specialties concentrate a larger proportion of consultations within the private sector. This is not a measure of job vacancies or a deficit of specialists, but rather the recorded care in private hospitals.

Specialized consultation, moreover, played a significant role in overall outpatient care. In 2025, it represented 48.5% of outpatient consultations. General consultations accounted for 34.7%, and emergencies for 14.1%. Dentistry and preventive medicine added up to 2.7%.

In total, private health establishments in Mexico reported 13,839,462 outpatient consultations during the year. This service was the most in demand among the various outpatient modalities considered by the INEGI.

The structure of hospitals also reflects the weight of specialized care. Although 90.2% of private establishments were general hospitals, 9.8% corresponded to specialty units. Within these latter units, obstetrics and gynecology had the largest share, with 4.4% of total establishments.

Furthermore, of the 17,453 available consulting rooms in private establishments, 71% were allocated to specialty consultations. The remaining 29% was used for general medicine and emergencies.

The presence of specialists also dominates among personnel directly attending to patients. Of 106,032 medical professionals in direct contact, 84.7% were specialists. In contrast, 11.1% corresponded to general medicine and 2% to residents.

Regarding causes of hospitalization, pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period represented 14.9% of hospital discharges in private establishments. Diseases of the digestive system accounted for 14.7%, and traumas, poisonings, and other external causes for 9.5%.
