San Luis Potosí Faces Sharp Increase in Business Delinquency in 2026

San Luis Potosí's business loan delinquency surged 223.2% in one year, far outpacing credit growth.

In twelve months, an additional 765.2 million pesos (mdd) were added to past-due loans within San Luis Potosí’s productive activities. Business delinquency in San Luis Potosí rose from 342.8 to 1,108 million pesos between the second quarter of 2025 and the same period in 2026. The increase reached 223.2% year-over-year, according to our own analysis using data from the Economic Information System of the Bank of Mexico.

This analysis considers loans for the agricultural, industrial, and service sectors. It excludes housing, consumer credit, the public sector, and financing to financial institutions.

What is Past-Due Loans and How is Delinquency Measured?

Past-due loans refer to credits for which payments have accumulated enough arrears for a financial institution to classify them as overdue.

The Delinquency Index, known as IMOR, indicates the percentage of the total loan portfolio that is past-due. It is calculated by dividing the past-due loan portfolio by the total loan portfolio and multiplying the result by one hundred.

During the second quarter of 2025, the combined index for the three productive sectors was 0.76%. By the same period in 2026, it reached 2.20%. This represents an increase of 1.44 percentage points.

Banxico classifies financing based on the borrower’s primary economic activity. However, the data reflects the evolution of past-due loans to productive sectors, not the number of delinquent companies.
