San Luis Potosí Ranks Eighth in Mexican Coffee Production

San Luis Potosí Ranks Eighth in Mexican Coffee Production

San Luis Potosí emerges as a significant coffee producer in Mexico, ranking eighth nationally and contributing to the economic vitality of its rural communities.

San Luis Potosí ranks among the country’s leading coffee producers, with a strong presence in the state’s agricultural sector activities. It is important to note that Mexican coffee production maintains a strong regional concentration. Chiapas, Veracruz, and Puebla account for more than eight out of every 10 tons produced in Mexico, according to data from the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) for the close of the 2025 agricultural year. National production reached 1,069,464.31 tons of coffee during that period. Although the main producing states are concentrated in the south and southeast, other regions also maintain relevant coffee-growing activity. Among these is San Luis Potosí, where coffee cultivation represents a source of income for families in various municipalities of the Huasteca Potosina region.

Which States Produce the Most Coffee in Mexico?

The 2025 agricultural year shows a considerable difference between the top-ranking states and the rest. Chiapas led national production, followed by Veracruz and Puebla.

This is the national top 10 for coffee production in 2025:

  • Chiapas: 391,690.56 tons
  • Veracruz: 267,791.53 tons
  • Puebla: 221,055.89 tons
  • Oaxaca: 93,800.64 tons
  • Guerrero: 38,881.57 tons
  • Hidalgo: 24,964.44 tons
  • Nayarit: 11,058.30 tons
  • San Luis Potosí: 9,915.38 tons
  • Jalisco: 5,574.78 tons
  • Colima: 3,703.92 tons

The top three states account for 82.3% of national production, while the states ranked from fourth to tenth show considerably lower volumes.

San Luis Potosí is the Eighth Largest Coffee Producer with Over 9,000 Tons

San Luis Potosí produced 9,915.38 tons during 2025, a volume that allowed it to achieve eighth place nationally. The state ranked below Nayarit, which produced 11,058.30 tons, but surpassed Jalisco and Colima. The difference with the seventh-place producer was just over 1,142 tons. Similarly, San Luis Potosí’s production represents approximately 0.9% of the national volume. Its importance, however, does not solely depend on its share of the country’s total output but on the economic activity it generates in producer communities.

Xilitla, Aquismón, and Tamazunchale Concentrate Potosino Coffee Production

State production is primarily concentrated in the Huasteca Potosina region. Xilitla leads the activity with over 3,000 tons, while Aquismón is also among the main producing municipalities. Tamazunchale registered 2,360 tons during 2025. The activity is also present in municipalities where coffee growing is part of the communities’ agricultural activities, such as:

  • Matlapa
  • Coxcatlán
  • Huehuetlán
  • Axtla de Terrazas
  • Tancanhuitz de Santos

This distribution explains why coffee holds significance beyond its state-level volume: for numerous families, it represents an activity linked to planting, harvesting, and commercializing the bean.

How Important is San Luis Potosí in National Production?

The eighth-place ranking places San Luis Potosí above other states with a coffee-growing tradition, such as Jalisco and Colima, although a considerable gap still exists compared to the leading states. Chiapas produced nearly 40 times more coffee than San Luis Potosí in 2025. Veracruz produced slightly more than 27 times the volume of San Luis Potosí, while Puebla registered around 22 times more. The comparison also helps quantify the concentration of the crop. While the top three states contributed over 880,000 tons, San Luis Potosí remained below 10,000 tons. Nevertheless, its national position confirms that the
