Monterrey Airport to Feature Mega Solar Park: How Many Panels Will Be Installed?

The Monterrey International Airport is advancing its sustainability strategy with a mega solar park and an expansion of its energy storage system. OMA’s initiative aims to strengthen operational efficiency and reduce emissions associated with energy consumption.

In this regard, the Centro Norte Airport Group (OMA) presented this project during OMA and VINCI Airports’ Environment Week. The new infrastructure includes renewable energy generation and battery storage.

Furthermore, the project comes after OMA surpassed its climate goal set for 2025. The company also maintains a strategy focused on energy efficiency, emissions reduction, and waste management.

How Many Solar Panels Will Monterrey Airport Have?

The new energy generation hub will incorporate approximately 15,000 high-efficiency solar panels. This infrastructure will achieve a generation capacity of 8.7 megawatts (MW). Additionally, the park will produce around 12.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy annually.

According to OMA, this generation is equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 7,000 Mexican households. It will also help avoid nearly 5,600 tons of CO₂ each year. The company states that the emissions reduction is equivalent to removing approximately 1,200 vehicles from circulation.

Thus, solar generation will be integrated into the airport’s energy needs. The project seeks to leverage renewable sources without compromising the continuity of airport operations.

Energy Storage

In addition to the solar park, OMA will expand its battery energy storage system (BESS). Currently, the airport has an installed capacity of 9 megawatt-hours (MWh). The project will add another 40 MWh, bringing the total to 49 MWh.

This system will enable better energy management during peak demand periods. It will also provide backup for critical loads and contribute to maintaining the airport’s operational continuity. The total storage capacity is equivalent to powering approximately 800

simultaneously. Therefore, the combination of solar generation and storage will allow for more flexible management of the energy produced.

Environmental Results

The project also contributes to OMA’s environmental advancements in recent years. The company reported a 55% reduction in CO₂ emissions per passenger in 2023, exceeding its target of 48% set for 2025.

To achieve this result, OMA implemented various measures across its airports, including the use of renewable energy, LED lighting, and high-efficiency air conditioning units. Furthermore, the company incorporated actions related to integrated waste management. As such, the solar park and batteries represent a new phase in the environmental strategy of OMA and VINCI Airports.

What Role Does Environment Week Play?

During Environment Week, OMA and VINCI Airports also promoted training activities for their employees. The program featured specialists from Enerion, World Resources Institute, and Global Zero Waste.

The activities aim to strengthen knowledge on environmental practices and encourage greater staff participation in sustainability strategies. From this perspective, OMA integrates infrastructure, technology, and training into its environmental strategy.

Ultimately, Monterrey Airport is moving towards an energy infrastructure with greater reliance on renewable sources.
