Costco to Open 4 New Locations in Mexico: Is Jalisco Included?
Costco Wholesale Mexico announces plans to open four new locations by 2026, reinforcing its commitment to the Mexican market and strategic growth.
Costco Wholesale Mexico has confirmed that 2026 will mark a new chapter in its national expansion strategy, with the opening of four new locations across different regions of the country. This announcement reinforces the U.S. firm’s confidence in the Mexican market. Furthermore, the company aims for strategic consolidation in key entities rather than immediate expansion into states where the brand already has a strong presence. However, this move is merely the first step in a long-term growth plan, designed for execution over the next two decades.
Costco’s Expansion Plan in Mexico
Costco Wholesale Mexico had previously anticipated that, starting in 2026, it would initiate an ambitious growth program in the country. Originally, the roadmap envisioned three new openings, but the start of the year brought a fourth store that was added to the project, with which the chain aims to close 2026 with 47 locations operating nationwide. This announcement comes in a particularly favorable context for the company. Costco is currently one of the most significant players in Mexico’s wholesale trade, supported by a business model based on memberships, economies of scale, and private labels, which has demonstrated resilience even in complex economic scenarios. Globally, the company is part of a network of over 870 stores, with a presence in strategic markets such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, and Spain. In the Mexican case, operations have become among the most significant within the group. During 2024, Costco reported net revenues of 94.5 billion pesos in Mexico.
Where Will Costco’s New Locations Be in 2026?
The four new Costco stores in Mexico will be located in Aguascalientes, Nuevo León, Mexico City, and Querétaro. Each project responds to a distinct market logic, ranging from capacity expansion to innovation in commercial formats.
– Aguascalientes:
One of the most advanced openings is in Aguascalientes, where Costco is constructing a new location adjacent to its current store, situated at Boulevard Aguascalientes Norte 802. -Estimated Investment: $100 million USD -Construction Progress: Final phase -Estimated Completion Date: September 2026 -Opening: Months following construction completion
A strategic element of this project is that the current store will be converted into a Costco gas station, a move that reinforces the brand’s service ecosystem and maximizes land utilization.
– Nuevo León:
In General Escobedo, Nuevo León, Costco is developing what will be its largest location in Mexico and Latin America, solidifying the state as one of the country’s most significant commercial hubs. -Property Area: 55,000 square meters -Location: General Escobedo -Estimated Start of Operations: Mid-2026
This project addresses the high economic and demographic dynamism of the Monterrey metropolitan area, as well as the increasing demand for large-scale wholesale formats.
– Mexico City:
Mexico City also joins the expansion plan with a new location in the Coyoacán borough, specifically at Avenida División del Norte 3443. Although the company has shared few technical details, it is estimated that: -The inauguration will occur during the second bimester of 2026 -The store will serve one of the areas with the highest member density in the capital -The project will help alleviate demand at other locations in the southern part of the city
– Querétaro:
The fourth opening will be located in the municipality of Corregidora, Querétaro, on the Corregidora–Huimilpan highway. Although the project is still in the permitting phase, it has garnered attention for the introduction of a new sales format. This model, not yet publicly detailed, promises to innovate within the wholesale industry, aligning with trends in efficiency, customer experience, and space optimization.
Will Costco Open a New Store in Jalisco?
Despite the enthusiasm generated by the announcement, Jalisco is not among the entities considered for the new openings in 2026. Currently, the state already has four locations, positioning it as one of the most consolidated markets for the chain in Mexico. While it is not ruled out that Jalisco may be considered in later phases of the 20-year expansion plan, Costco’s strategy for now appears to focus on expanding its presence in states with high population growth. It also seeks to increase installed capacity in high-demand areas, as well as test new formats before replicating them in mature markets.
Costco’s Current Presence in Mexico
According to official company information, Costco currently operates 43 stores in Mexico, with coverage extending from Tijuana to Cancún, encompassing the northern, central, and southeastern regions of the country. -Aguascalientes: 1 -Baja California: 3 -Baja California Sur: 1 -Chihuahua: 2 -Mexico City: 6 -Coahuila: 2 -State of Mexico: 6 -Guanajuato: 3 -Jalisco: 4 -Michoacán: 1 -Morelos: 1 -Nuevo León: 3 -Puebla: 1 -Querétaro: 1 -Quintana Roo: 1 -San Luis Potosí: 1 -Sinaloa: 1 -Sonora: 1 -Tabasco: 1 -Veracruz: 2 -Yucatán: 1
