Households in San Luis Potosí Report Quarterly Income of Nearly 100,000 Pesos: INEGI

Mexican household income shows significant regional disparities, and San Luis Potosí is no exception, with its municipalities reporting quarterly incomes close to 100,000 pesos, unlike many other areas.

Nationally, according to the 2024 study “Current Income for Municipalities of Mexico” (ICMM), conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), three out of every four municipalities in the country recorded average quarterly household incomes below 60,000 pesos.

The study, released on September 28, 2026, estimates the average quarterly current income per household across 2,469 municipalities.

What is the Income of Households in Mexican Municipalities?

The national landscape reveals a broad distribution. The largest group comprises municipalities with average quarterly incomes ranging from 45,000 to less than 60,000 pesos, accounting for 737 municipalities, or 29.9% of the total.

Following this are 562 municipalities in the very low income bracket and 541 in the low income bracket. When these three groups are combined, 74.5% of the country’s municipalities fall below the 60,000 pesos quarterly income per household threshold.

In contrast, 481 municipalities were situated in the high income bracket, with earnings between 60,000 and less than 80,000 pesos, while 148 municipalities reached the very high income bracket, with quarterly incomes between 80,000 and 176,661 pesos.

This indicates that only 25.5% of municipalities were in the high and very high income brackets.

Household Income in San Luis Potosí Surpasses 99,000 Pesos Quarterly

Specifically, each household in the municipality of San Luis Potosí reported an average quarterly current income of 99,944 pesos in 2024.

This figure places the municipality within the top 40 municipalities with the highest average quarterly current income in the country, according to the chart published by INEGI.

In this ranking, San Luis Potosí shows the second-lowest figure among the 40 municipalities considered.

Distributing this income over three months equates to an average of 33,315 pesos per household per month.

Household Income in San Luis Potosí Contrasts with Other Municipalities in the State

Furthermore, INEGI itself points out that San Luis Potosí is one of the states with the greatest heterogeneity in municipal income levels, alongside Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, Hidalgo, and Zacatecas.

This means that municipalities within San Luis Potosí coexist across different income strata. The contrast is evident in the national graph itself, as Tampamolón Corona, San Luis Potosí, appears among the municipalities with the lowest incomes, at 22,879 pesos quarterly per household.

The difference between these two municipalities within San Luis Potosí is 77,065 pesos quarterly per household, demonstrating that income levels are not uniform within the state.

Which Municipalities Have the Highest Incomes in the Country?

Nationally, the municipality with the highest estimated income was Benito Juárez, Mexico City, with 176,661 pesos quarterly per household.

This was followed by Miguel Hidalgo, also in Mexico City, with 155,273 pesos; San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León, with 149,095 pesos; San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, with 147,423 pesos; and Apodaca, Nuevo León, with 140,948 pesos.

Considering these figures, the difference between Benito Juárez and San Luis Potosí municipality is 76,717 pesos quarterly per household.

Nevertheless, the San Luis Potosí municipality is part of the group of 40 demarcations with the highest estimated incomes in the country, in a list dominated by municipalities from Mexico City, Nuevo León, Baja California, and other northern states, as well as some municipalities from the central region.

The Map Reveals a Marked Regional Difference

The 2024 ICMM identifies a concentration of municipalities with higher incomes in the north and northwest of the country, as well as in some urban areas of the central region.

In contrast, the very low and low income brackets are more prevalent in the south and southeast. Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Guerrero have the highest proportions of municipalities in these levels.

The national disparity is substantial. Benito Juárez registers 16.6 times the estimated income of Santa Magdalena Jicotlán, Oaxaca, the municipality with the lowest recorded income of 10,617 pesos quarterly.

For San Luis Potosí, the data for the capital municipality stands out within this national panorama, although INEGI’s information also shows that income changes considerably from one demarcation to another within the state.
