IMPI Reports 430 Protected Inventions in Querétaro

Querétaro boasts 430 protected inventions and plays a strategic role in national innovation, according to IMPI, despite facing some competitiveness challenges.

The state of Querétaro possesses 430 active protected inventions, with over 150 more currently undergoing processing at the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), according to its director, Santiago Nieto Castillo. During a conference held at Cuauhtémoc University, Nieto Castillo explained that intellectual property is not merely a “procedure,” but is also intrinsically linked to sustainable development and economic innovation. He further noted that, within the context of the , Mexico has committed to harmonizing its protection standards with North America. Querétaro: A Strategic Hub for National Innovation

According to Nieto Castillo, the state of holds significant national importance in the innovation landscape. This is attributed to the substantial number of protected inventions, primarily concentrated in sectors such as chemistry, mechanical engineering, and electronics. “Protecting these creations ensures that companies and entrepreneurs derive economic benefits from their ideas and facilitates their access to funding,” he emphasized. He also recalled the nationwide “Operation Clean-up” strategy, which aims to combat trademark and product counterfeiting to safeguard domestic industry and consumers.

Challenges in Querétaro’s Innovation Landscape

The Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) ranked Querétaro eighth nationally for the highest number of patent registrations, with a rate of 2.0 per 100,000 inhabitants. According to the institute, states well-positioned in this regard attract more talent and investment and are more likely to generate employment and wealth. However, in this category, despite being in the Top 10 for patent registrations, Querétaro was assessed with “medium-high” competitiveness and dropped two positions compared to the 2024 State Competitiveness Index (ICE).
