Irapuato Station and Passenger Train Project Unveiled to Business Leaders

A new passenger rail project for Irapuato, connecting to Querétaro and Mexico City, was presented to business leaders, promising significant economic and urban development.

During a meeting with business leaders, authorities, and social leaders, representatives from the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) presented to business executives the project for a station in

and a Querétaro–Irapuato passenger train, an initiative poised to boost connectivity, urban development, and the regional economy. Mayor Lorena Alfaro García emphasized the significance of this presentation to business chambers and state authorities, highlighting that the terminal will be located at the old train station, on Primero de Mayo Avenue, next to the Irapuato Bus Terminal. “This major project will further invigorate our municipality and strengthen connectivity with Querétaro and Mexico City,” stated Alfaro García.

Strategic Location and Modernization Works

According to the ARTF, the location was selected after an exhaustive technical analysis due to its existing infrastructure and easy access to major transportation routes. The plan includes works on existing tracks and interventions at key points such as Calzada de Guadalupe, the Álvaro Obregón Underpass, and the Municipal Cemetery crossing. Furthermore, a comprehensive modernization of the terminal is envisioned, featuring multimodal connection areas and renovated urban spaces. Bidding processes are currently underway, and work is projected to conclude in 2028, with operations commencing in 2029.

A Train Connecting the Bajío Region with the Capital

The Querétaro–Irapuato train will be one of the most significant projects within the national passenger train plan promoted by the Federal Government. Spanning 108.2 kilometers, the project includes stations in Querétaro, Apaseo el Grande, Celaya, Cortazar/Villagrán, Salamanca, and Irapuato. The first phase will cover 30.3 kilometers, from Querétaro to Apaseo el Grande, under the responsibility of the company Mota-Engil. This section is expected to serve an estimated demand of 30,000 daily passengers, with a final destination to Mexico City.

Economic and Social Impact of the Project

According to official data, the train will benefit over 2 million residents of the Bajío industrial corridor. Furthermore, it will generate nearly 10,000 jobs, comprising 1,518 direct and 8,255 indirect positions during the construction phase. The project is part of the national railway plan, which includes the Mexico–AIFA, Mexico–Pachuca, and Mexico–Querétaro trains, with operational targets between 2025 and 2027. Collectively, these projects aim to revitalize public rail transport, reduce travel times, and promote more sustainable and efficient mobility.

Irapuato: A Modern City with a Vision for the Future

With this railway station, Irapuato solidifies its position as a modern and connected city, featuring infrastructure that enhances its strategic location in the Bajío region. The mayor reiterated her commitment to work collaboratively with federal and state governments to renew the urban environment, ensuring that the project integrates seamlessly into the city’s fabric. The Querétaro–Irapuato train will not only improve the mobility of thousands of people but will also strengthen the economic competitiveness of the country’s most dynamic industrial corridor.
