Leadership in Achieving the SDGs of the 2030 Agenda
Situation in Mexico
Mexico ranks 80th out of 166 countries in the global SDG index, showing a decline compared to 2020. Regarding government efforts and commitments to achieve the SDGs, Mexico ranks 20th out of 74 countries analyzed.
Considerations
Achieving the SDGs is a continuous process and requires the participation of governments, civil society, academia, and the private sector. The 2030 Agenda, which includes the SDGs, is a roadmap for sustainable development at a global level “leaving no one behind.”
By State
In the latest evaluation, Mexico City, Baja California, and Querétaro were the states with the best results in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Mexico. These three entities achieved compliance rates above 64%, highlighting their commitment to the 2030 Agenda.
Aguascalientes has made significant progress in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN’s 2030 Agenda. This is especially true in areas such as Zero Hunger, Quality Education, Health and Well-being, and Clean Water and Sanitation. Violence against women and children in non-permitted occupations appears in red.

The importance of culture is recognized to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, as reflected in programs such as “Mérida resilient culture”.
Saltillo: Prioritizing Sustainable Urbanization for the Sdgs1870
Saltillo seeks to build more sustainable and inclusive cities, aligning with the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda, according to a publication by UN-Habitat. The municipality seeks to involve citizens in the planning and execution of projects related to sustainable development.
Mexicali: Signing of Collaboration Agreements
The municipal government has signed agreements with institutions such as the Tecnológico de Mexicali to promote sustainability. The Tecnológico de Mexicali is training students on the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda. Mexicali maintains a comprehensive strategy that involves all actors, from the government to civil society and the private sector.
Querétaro: Launch of the Q500 Territorial Strategy
The municipal government, through IMPLAN, launched the Q500 Territorial Strategy, which implements the principles of the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda in Querétaro. Programs have been implemented to improve the quality of education and ensure access to technical and professional training.
San Luis Potosí: Sustainable Mobility
San Luis Potosí has presented itself as a benchmark in sustainable mobility, highlighting the success of MetroRed and the implementation of electric units in the Huasteca region. MetroRed is the first free public transportation system in Mexico.
Morelia: Improving the Quality of Life of the Population
In Morelia, alignment with the 2030 Agenda translates into efforts to improve the quality of life of the population, address challenges such as inequality and poverty, and promote inclusive and sustainable economic development.
Querétaro, Puebla, and Mérida, with high levels of schooling, stand out for their balance between accessibility and educational quality, as well as for their cultural heritage and security.
Mexico City, Monterrey, and Mérida are the cities with the greatest access to quality health services in Mexico.
La Paz and Hermosillo are metropolitan areas that obtained high scores in SDG 2, indicating better management of food security and nutrition.

Citibanamex presented the Sustainable States Index (IES) to learn about the challenges and progress of each of the federal entities in complying with the SDGs. The IES reflects that in Mexico there is a lag in development between the southeast region and the rest of the country, especially in relation to the northern states. In the general index, the northern region of the country obtained the highest average (61.94 points) and the southeastern region, the lowest (46.2 points). That is, there is a gap of 15.7 points between the average of the northern region and that of the southeastern region. Places 2, 3 and 4 were obtained by the central, central-northern and north-western regions, respectively.
