Nuevo León Aims to Expand SMEs' Reach to International Markets

Nuevo León Aims to Expand SMEs' Reach to International Markets

Nuevo León launches initiatives to boost SME exports and integrate them into global supply chains.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nuevo León have an opportunity to expand their markets through exports, at a time when the state is seeking to strengthen the participation of its local companies in national and international supply chains.

Through the state’s Ministry of Economy, the Government of Nuevo León is promoting training, advisory, and business linkage programs aimed at enabling more businesses to develop the necessary capabilities to sell outside the state and compete in international markets.

The Secretary-General of Government, Miguel Flores, noted that the state’s infrastructure, business ecosystem, and availability of skilled labor represent advantages for local companies to advance into new markets.

“The next step is for them to take their products to the world.”

The strategy aims for SMEs not only to find new clients but also to integrate as suppliers to large companies with operations in Nuevo León.

What opportunities will Nuevo León’s SMEs have for exporting?

One of the announced mechanisms is Business Nights: From Nuevo León to the World, an event scheduled for August 24th, organized by the Ministry of Economy of Nuevo León in collaboration with INDEX Nuevo León and Santander.

The objective will be to facilitate meetings between local companies and global corporations to identify business opportunities and establish commercial ties.

These types of platforms can be particularly relevant for SMEs that do not yet have commercial networks outside of Mexico but have products or services with the potential to be incorporated into international supply chains.

The strategy also includes specialized training to reduce some of the barriers companies face when seeking to begin exporting.

Nuevo León Prepares Program to Integrate SMEs into International Markets

On August 26th, the Program for the Integration of Nuevo León SMEs into International Markets will commence, developed by the state government in alliance with COMCE Noreste.

The program will consist of three sessions focused on practical knowledge to help companies advance their internationalization processes.

Among the topics covered are:

  • Commercial intelligence and logistics.
  • Customs regulations.
  • Export support tools.

The purpose is to provide entrepreneurs with the elements to identify markets, understand the requirements associated with foreign trade, and improve their logistics processes.

Exports: A Pathway to Diversify Business Growth

For SMEs, entering international markets can represent a way to diversify clients, increase sales, and reduce dependence on a single market. However, it also involves facing regulatory, logistical, and commercial requirements that can be complex for companies beginning their internationalization process.

In this context, training becomes relevant because it allows businesses to learn about the procedures and available tools before engaging in foreign trade operations.

The aims for this process to also contribute to strengthening local supply chains. The intention is for more small and medium-sized companies to become suppliers to large corporations and, subsequently, expand their reach to other markets.

Why is Nuevo León Betting on its SMEs?

The strategy is part of a broader agenda to leverage the state’s competitive advantages: infrastructure, connectivity, industrial concentration, human capital, and a developed business ecosystem.

For Nuevo León, strengthening SMEs also means expanding the base of companies capable of participating in the productive chains linked to global industries.

The challenge in this regard is not only to increase the number of exporting companies but to ensure that more local businesses develop the capabilities to remain in those markets and scale their operations.

Interested companies and entrepreneurs can consult the available activities and training and advisory options through the portal of the Ministry of Economy of Nuevo León.

With this agenda, the state seeks to ensure that internationalization is no longer a possibility reserved for large corporations but also becomes a growth alternative for SMEs.
