Eighteen months ago, the conversation around artificial intelligence in Mexican boardrooms still revolved around a tepid question: Should we try ChatGPT? Today, that question has aged poorly. While many local companies are still debating whether to open a corporate account, in other latitudes, AI no longer just answers emails: it writes them, sends them, opens the next file, and has the report ready before Monday’s meeting.
The change has a technical name—agents—but an accounting effect: data shows a 5x to 30x productivity improvement in complex tasks for Fortune 500 companies implementing these tools, with 51% of companies already having agents in production by 2026. This is not a horizon for 2030. This is the current semester.
What Has Truly Changed
The leap defining this year isn’t that models are “smarter.” It’s that they’ve moved from suggesting to executing. They no longer tell you what to do: they do it. They can read files on your computer, execute commands, open the browser, respond to emails, and consult calendars. The difference between an assistant that advises and an agent that delivers is, in business terms, the difference between a tool and a collaborator.
Three examples to illustrate:
Claude Code, from Anthropic, is probably the most discussed case of the year among technical teams. It’s an agent that writes, tests, and deploys code. Its impact became headline news when the Uber case emerged: the company exhausted its annual AI budget for 2026 in just four months, spending approximately $30,000 daily on AI for 5,000 engineers. Was it worth it? For them, yes: AI-written backend code went from less than 1% to 11% in three months, indicating deep integration into the workflow. The figure seems small until you calculate what 11% of the effort of an engineering team of that scale signifies.
OpenAI’s Codex plays in the same arena from a different angle and is the other tool any technical leadership is evaluating today. Along with Cursor, Devin AI, and others, they form the ecosystem of development agents redefining what it means to “have a software team” in a medium-sized enterprise.
Claude Cowork, the example that should most interest non-technical executives, is in a league of its own. Launched in January 2026, it’s a desktop application for macOS and Windows designed for knowledge workers without a technical background. The concept is simple: the user grants it access to a folder on their computer, describes the task they need completed, and Claude executes it autonomously. It can read existing files, create new documents, organize folders, extract data from PDFs into spreadsheets, draft reports from scattered notes, and generate presentations from messy outlines. Read that again. It already exists. And it’s already in use.
To this, we must add that Microsoft launched Agent 365 on May 1, 2026, at $15 per user, as an enterprise-scale agent management and governance layer. When one of the world’s top five largest companies creates a product to manage the agents already deployed within organizations, that tells you something about the maturity of the phenomenon.
The Mexican Executive’s Paradox
There has never been so much transformative power within reach for a small or medium-sized enterprise. And there has never been so much paralysis due to not knowing where to start. The paradox is real: the barrier is no longer money—many of these tools cost less per month than a business lunch; the barrier is judgment. Where do you begin? What do you buy and what don’t you? What are you allowed to let an agent do within the organization? Who is responsible when an agent makes a wrong decision?
The good news is that the problem is no longer technology; it’s methodology. And methodology can be learned.
Companies that are truly leveraging AI in 2026 have three things in common. First, they don’t tie themselves to a single tool: the clear trend is multimodal. The smartest companies use Claude for complex reasoning and document analysis, GPT for integrations, Gemini for data and Google Workspace, and local models for tasks requiring absolute privacy, all orchestrated from a central platform. Second, they govern: they establish clear rules about what information can leave, what decisions an agent can make, and what requires human supervision. Third, they start with a diagnosis, not a purchase. They know where they are, where they want to go, and which pieces they need to move in what order.
