Dollar, Gold, and Oil Prices Mark Opening of Financial Markets Today

Mixed market signals driven by geopolitical tensions, inflation data, and key corporate/economic events.

Financial markets kicked off the week with mixed signals, in a session marked by geopolitical tension between the United States and Iran, anticipation for new inflation data in the U.S., and the proximity of two events that could define investor sentiment. These include the quarterly results from Nvidia and Kevin Warsh’s first speech as Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair at the Jackson Hole symposium. Furthermore, the opening on Monday, August 24th, put the Mexican peso under pressure against the dollar once again, although the national currency managed to stay below the 17-unit barrier. In early trading, the exchange rate reached around 16.94 pesos per dollar as investors processed information related to bi-weekly inflation and the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

On the international stage, asset performance reflected increased risk aversion. Asian stock markets registered significant declines, particularly technology companies, while European markets showed more contained movements. Simultaneously, gold gained appeal as a safe-haven asset, reaching over three-month highs, favored by dollar weakness and expectations regarding U.S. monetary policy.

Financial Markets: What Marked the Start of the Trading Day?

The start of the week was determined by a combination of macroeconomic, geopolitical, and corporate factors that kept investors attentive to any signals capable of modifying expectations for the coming months. Among the key elements marking the opening are:

  • Mexican Peso Traded Below 17 Units per Dollar: The national currency experienced a depreciation of nearly 0.15% in early trading, quoting around 16.94 pesos per dollar. During overnight trading, the exchange rate moved between 16.89 and 16.94 units. The dollar index, meanwhile, advanced 0.15% to 98.95 points. Even with this pressure, the peso maintains a relatively solid position against the greenback, having traded below 17 units for several sessions. A reference published on Monday placed the exchange rate around 16.94 pesos, while the official value disseminated by Banco de México stood at 16.9018 pesos.
  • Gold Reached Over Three-Month Highs: At 10:04 AM GMT, spot gold was up 1%, reaching $4,649.08 per ounce, its highest level since May 15th. U.S. gold futures also registered gains, trading at $4,706.20. This performance reflects renewed interest in assets considered safe havens amid an international environment characterized by geopolitical tensions and uncertainty about the direction of interest rates.
  • Oil Took a Breather After Recent Strong Gains: International crude oil prices began the session with declines, in a day where investors capitalized on some of the recently accumulated gains. Brent crude traded around $91.27 per barrel, down nearly 1.5%, while other benchmarks placed Brent in the $93 range during early trading. WTI, on the other hand, traded around $86 per barrel.
  • European Stock Markets Advanced Cautiously: The Stoxx Europe 600 registered a marginal increase of 0.06%, while Germany’s DAX advanced 0.04%. In contrast, France’s CAC 40 slipped 0.04%, and London’s FTSE 100 showed a 0.16% advance in early session references. Europe’s relative stability contrasts with the behavior observed in Asia, where technology companies faced a considerably more challenging day.
  • Asia Concentrated the Largest Losses: South Korea’s KOSPI retreated 3.2%, primarily driven by the semiconductor sector. Samsung Electronics fell 8.9%, while SK Hynix lost 3.4%. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng decreased 2.1%, while Alibaba plummeted nearly 10%. The company priced a share offering at 80 billion Hong Kong dollars, equivalent to approximately $10.2 billion, at a discount to its previous closing price. In mainland China, the CSI 300 lost 1.3% and the Shanghai Composite retreated 0.7%. Japan also experienced mixed movements: the Nikkei 225 fell 0.5%, while the TOPIX gained 0.2%. SoftBank retreated around 5% after announcing a record retail bond issuance.
  • Wall Street Futures Pointed to a Negative Opening: The U.S. market began the week cautiously. Nasdaq 100 futures retreated around 0.7%, while S&P 500 futures decreased approximately 0.2%. The most recent references also show pressure on U.S. futures, particularly for technology companies, amid anticipation for Nvidia’s results and signals the Federal Reserve may provide regarding interest rates. The Fed is capturing investor attention.

Dollar Price Today in Mexico: How Much is it Worth at Banks and Financial Institutions?

On Monday, August 24th, the dollar price in Mexico remains below 17 units in the interbank market. The quotation hovers around 16.95 pesos per dollar, although the value may vary between banks and exchange houses due to purchase and sale prices.

Meanwhile, the interbank exchange rate registered by Banco de México closed on Friday, August 21st, at 16.9203 pesos per dollar, with a high of 16.9250 and a low of 16.8930 pesos during that session. Additionally, on Monday, the dollar is sold at teller windows of financial institutions in Mexico as follows:

  • Banamex: 17.35 units
  • Banorte: 17.25 units
  • BBVA: 17.41 units

The difference between the interbank exchange rate and the price shown at teller windows is primarily due to the margin each financial institution sets for its foreign exchange buying and selling operations.
