Ternium Expands Pesquería Plant: How Does It Strengthen Steel Production in Mexico?

Ternium initiates operations at two new production lines in Pesquería, significantly expanding its capacity and reinforcing Mexico's steel industry with advanced technology and substantial investment.

In Nuevo León, particularly within the industrial corridor of Monterrey and its metropolitan area, the steel industry marks a new chapter. Ternium has commenced operations on two new production lines at its Pesquería Industrial Center plant, as part of its strategy to bolster flat steel manufacturing in Mexico.

What New Lines Are Now Operational at the Pesquería Industrial Center?

The company has initiated production on a cold rolling mill and a galvanizing line, facilities that are part of the complex’s third expansion phase. Both lines have already begun their progressive commissioning phase.

Máximo Vedoya —Ternium’s CEO— confirmed the startup to investors. He also explained that the project included a pickling line and a finishing lines center, which are currently operating integrally.

These new capabilities enable the manufacturing of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). This type of steel is strategic for the automotive industry, as it reduces weight and improves vehicle safety. Furthermore, the company will serve sectors such as construction and home appliances.

What Is the Total Investment and What Does It Represent for Nuevo León?

The third phase of expansion is part of a project that entails a total investment of 4 billion dollars, considered the largest in the company’s history.

Since 2010, the Ternium Industrial Center in Pesquería has accumulated 7.57 billion dollars in investments. Additionally, it generates over 2,500 direct jobs, thereby strengthening the state’s industrial value chain.

This volume of capital not only expands productive capacity but also positions Pesquería as one of the most modern and technologically advanced steel complexes in the region.

What Will Be the Capacity of the New Steel Mill Under Construction?

Furthermore, the project includes an integrated steel mill featuring Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). Currently, the slab operation remains in progress, although the company reports advancements as planned.

This facility will have an estimated annual capacity of 2.6 million tons. Consequently, it will significantly increase steel production in the northern region of the country.

The company highlighted that this steel mill is poised to be one of the most modern on the continent.

How Is Ternium Navigating the Context of Tariffs and Global Competition?

Nonetheless, this announcement occurs within an environment characterized by

on steel, adjustments in automotive production, and international competition. Despite these factors, Ternium remains committed to Mexico.

Vedoya further emphasized that the new plant will enable the production of high-quality

steel with lower carbon dioxide emissions per ton. Additionally, the project includes the capacity to utilize green hydrogen when economically viable.

Consequently, the expansion combines increased capacity, technological innovation, and environmental efficiency. With this, Nuevo León strengthens its role as Mexico’s industrial epicenter and as a strategic platform for the steel sector in the Americas.
