Train Would Position San Luis Potosí as a Key Logistics Hub in Mexico

The arrival of a passenger train in San Luis Potosí opens up new possibilities for the state’s connectivity, leveraging its strategic location between the Bajío region and the northern part of the country to strengthen its role as a logistics center. In this regard, the Secretary General of Government, J. Guadalupe Torres Sánchez, indicated that the entity is strategically positioned within a railway project that will connect the center of the country with the north and subsequently with the Nuevo Laredo border. The official’s perspective is noteworthy because the train will not arrive in San Luis Potosí as an isolated project. Its development will coincide with new highways, airport infrastructure, and industrial projects that can expand San Luis Potosí’s connectivity capacity.

Querétaro-San Luis Potosí-Saltillo Train Advances Towards Construction Phase

The federal project includes the Querétaro-San Luis Potosí and San Luis Potosí-Saltillo train routes as part of the second phase of the national passenger train program. The latest information shows that both projects are already in the contracting process. For the Querétaro-San Luis Potosí stretch, tenders are planned for three sub-sections, encompassing railway works, viaducts, tunnels, bridges, and stations. The Querétaro-San Luis Potosí route is projected to cover over 270 kilometers of railway, while the San Luis Potosí-Saltillo project involves approximately 310 kilometers of track, according to official project summaries. Furthermore, the federal government has incorporated both routes into its strategy to develop a passenger railway network independent of freight transportation infrastructure.

Railway Museum Could Become San Luis Potosí’s Central Station

One of the projects that has advanced significantly in the state capital is the integration of the Railway Museum into the new system. The state government reported that the Federal government has requested the building’s plans to design the necessary modifications, allowing the venue to function as a station without losing its cultural purpose. This proposal has also received support from cultural authorities, who have highlighted the need to protect the museum’s historical heritage during any interventions. Additionally, in August, the state government announced efforts to incorporate a station in Matehuala, a proposal that would be registered as station number 14 on the route, although its definition falls under the federal process.

Train Will Integrate with Highways and Other Infrastructure Projects

The passenger train’s logistical potential in San Luis Potosí does not rely solely on railway lines. Torres Sánchez also linked the train to the construction of the Valles-Tampico highway, an infrastructure project aimed at improving the connectivity of the Huasteca Potosina region with other markets. Added to this is the project for a new airport in Tamuín, which the official differentiated from an expansion of the existing terminal. The combination of train, highway, and air connectivity could broaden the options for the movement of people, goods, and tourism activities across different regions of the state.

San Luis Potosí to Be Connected with the Bajío and the North

The state’s location gains particular importance within the federal government’s proposed railway map. The Querétaro-San Luis Potosí route will link the state with the Bajío region, while the San Luis Potosí-Saltillo connection will allow for onward travel to the north and integration with the Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo corridor. The Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo project is already under construction at various stages, with the SICT reporting clearing, embankment, and drainage works, as well as processes related to stations and railway systems. Consequently, San Luis Potosí could occupy an intermediate position within a network connecting markets in central and northern Mexico.

Infrastructure Can Accommodate New Investments

The Secretary General of Government linked this new infrastructure to the state’s capacity to attract companies and expand its economic activity. San Luis Potosí already possesses a significant industrial base and highway corridors connecting to various regions of the country. The new railway system will add a passenger mobility alternative and strengthen regional connectivity. The institutional program of the Agency for Integrated Trains and Public Transport itself states that railway expansion aims to foster economic, social, and tourist development in the connected areas. Based on this premise, the challenge for San Luis Potosí will be to leverage the new railway infrastructure along with its highways, industrial parks, and connections to other markets to consolidate its position within Mexico’s production chains.
