Viva Aerobus Announces New International Flights from Mexico
Viva Aerobus launches new direct flights from AIFA to Cartagena and Medellín, enhancing Mexico's international air connectivity and AIFA's global presence.
International air connectivity from Mexico continues to expand, and the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) is solidifying its role within the regional aeronautical landscape. This expansion was announced by Viva Aerobus, which revealed the launch of two new direct routes to Colombia, one of the most strategically relevant markets for tourism and business in Latin America.
Starting in May and June, the low-cost airline will begin operating flights from AIFA to Cartagena and Medellín, respectively. These two cities join Bogotá, a destination to which Viva has maintained direct connectivity from Mexico for five years.
The announcement was made in a strategic context, specifically, on the cusp of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and amidst a federal policy aimed at strengthening international
, particularly from AIFA, a terminal seeking to establish itself as an alternate hub to Mexico City International Airport.
AIFA Strengthens its International Projection with New Routes to Colombia
The integration of AIFA–Cartagena and AIFA–Medellín flights represents a significant step in AIFA’s maturation process as an airport with an international vocation. Each new connection expands its destination network, increases passenger flow, and enhances its positioning with airlines and travelers.
From the federal government’s perspective, these routes align with a clear strategy of market diversification and strengthening air ties with priority Latin American countries. During the official announcement, made at the morning press conference, the Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, emphasized that Colombia is currently the fourth-largest source market for tourists to Mexico.
This sustained growth has transformed the Mexico–Colombia corridor into one of the most dynamic in the region, driven by both leisure tourism and flows for business, education, and labor mobility.
Viva Aerobus Expands Flights to South America
For Viva Aerobus, the launch of these new routes is not an isolated move but part of an international expansion strategy that began five years ago with the Mexico City–Bogotá route. Since then, the airline has added flights to the Colombian capital from Cancún, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.
According to the company’s own data, it has transported nearly one million passengers between both countries to date, confirming the robust demand and market growth potential.
Jesús Horacio González, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Viva Aerobus, explained that Colombia represents a natural gateway to South America: “We know that Colombia is a gateway to South America. There is significant cultural affinity between both countries, no visa is required, and the authorities’ efforts to reduce inadmissible passengers have been key to ensuring the success of these routes.”
When Will AIFA Flights to Cartagena and Medellín Commence?
The new international routes from AIFA to Colombia will operate in two phases, aligned with peak travel seasons and international events.
Flight Schedule:
- AIFA – Cartagena: Operations begin in May
- AIFA – Medellín: Flights commence in June
- AIFA – Bogotá: Destination already operational
These routes will allow passengers to travel more directly and accessibly, avoiding layovers and congestion at other airports, while also leveraging AIFA’s operational advantages.
Cartagena and Medellín: Key Destinations for Mexican Travelers
The selection of Cartagena and Medellín is based on both tourism and strategic criteria. Both cities have established themselves as attractive hubs for the Mexican market, albeit with distinct profiles.
Cartagena, with its walled city, colonial heritage, and Caribbean beach offerings, remains one of the most attractive destinations for leisure tourism. It is particularly in demand for relaxation trips, weddings, conferences, and cultural getaways.
Medellín, on the other hand, has gained international recognition as a benchmark for urban innovation, social transformation, and cultural development. Furthermore, it serves as a strategic point to connect with other regions of Colombia, making it a key hub for business travel, studies, and entrepreneurship.
