Which Banks Will Not Open Today, February 23, in Mexico? Institutions Affected by Violence

Several banks in Mexico have announced closures on February 23 due to security concerns stemming from recent violent incidents. Find out which institutions are affected.

The banking day this Monday, February 23, 2026, began marked by violence, security operations, and road blockades in various regions of the country. Consequently, as a security measure, some bank branches will not open today in Mexico.

The preventive closure of bank branches responds to a wave of violent incidents recorded over the weekend, which included narco-blockades, vehicle burnings, and attacks on public and financial facilities, particularly in the western part of the country. Among the most serious episodes reported was the burning of Banco del Bienestar branches in municipalities in the State of Mexico, Jalisco, and Puebla, which raised alarms throughout the financial system. The catalyst for this

was the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho”, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during a federal operation. The criminal response led to coordinated actions that affected mobility, school operations, and now, directly, the opening of banks.
