Which Mexican Company Produces Steel with the Lowest Emissions in North America?
Grupo DEACERO achieves certifications from the Global Steel Climate Council, positioning Mexico in the global steel decarbonization agenda.
The decarbonization of steel is advancing in the global steel industry. In this context, Grupo DEACERO obtained two certifications from the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC). With this certification, DEACERO becomes the first Mexican member of the GSCC, which expands Mexico’s presence in international decarbonization mechanisms for the steel sector.
What Does the Global Steel Climate Council Certification Mean for the Steel Industry?
Thus, the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) established the Steel Climate Standard in August 2023, an international framework for measuring and reporting carbon emissions in the steel industry.
This standard allows companies to assess the carbon
emissions intensity per facility and set verifiable emissions reduction targets aligned with global climate goals.
Furthermore, the system incorporates annual audits and third-party certifications, which allows for the verification of actual progress in emissions reduction and ensures transparency for investors and governments.
In this context, DEACERO obtained two key certifications within the standard:
- CASEI (Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity): measures the average emissions intensity in steel production.
- SBET (Science-Based Emissions Target): validates corporate emissions reduction targets based on science.
These tools aim to accelerate the transformation of the steel industry. This sector generates around 7% of global carbon dioxide emissions, according to international estimates.
How Does DEACERO Strengthen Its Industrial Decarbonization Strategy?
Likewise, obtaining these certifications is part of DEACERO’s Decarbonization Roadmap, a corporate strategy focused on reducing emissions in its industrial operations.
According to Hernán Treviño —Director of Energy and Sustainability at Grupo DEACERO—, the recognition represents significant progress within the company’s environmental policy. Furthermore, the executive emphasized that the company aims to maintain steel production with the lowest emissions in North America.
The strategy includes technological innovation, energy efficiency, and improvements in industrial processes. It also sets emissions reduction targets for 2040, which is 10 years ahead of the goal set by the global standard.
Why Does DEACERO’s Certification Position Mexico in the Steel Climate Agenda?
Nevertheless, the certification also has implications for the Mexican steel industry, which faces increasing pressure to align with international environmental standards.
This recognition places Mexico within the global conversation on steel decarbonization, especially at a time when the industry faces new environmental regulations, ESG criteria, and climate trade mechanisms.
Where is the Transition Towards Lower-Emission Steel Heading?
Furthermore, the steel industry is undergoing a profound transformation. Increasingly, companies are adopting
energy efficiency technologies, industrial electrification, and the use of clean energies.
In this context, climate certifications play a strategic role. These tools allow for measuring the environmental impact of steel production and strengthening the international competitiveness of companies.
Finally, for DEACERO, obtaining the CASEI and SBET certifications represents a decisive step within this transition. Furthermore, it reinforces the company’s position as a relevant player in steel decarbonization in North America, a process that will shape the future of the global steel industry.
