BMW Production in San Luis Potosí Falls Over 50% in First Bimester of 2026
BMW's San Luis Potosí plant sees production plunge over 50% in early 2026, contrasting with overall Mexican auto industry trends.
The automotive industry in Mexico commenced 2026 with 250,084 light vehicles sold between January and February. This figure represented an annual increase of 4.39%, according to the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles (RAIAVL) from INEGI. During the same period, national production reached 625,774 units, a variation of -0.6% compared to the first bimester of 2025. Concurrently, exports totaled 485,426 vehicles, signifying a 1.4% annual increase. Of the total dispatched abroad, the United States accounted for 75.7% of shipments.
Nissan Leads Car Sales in Mexico
During the first bimester of the year,
remained the brand with the highest sales volume in the country. The automaker placed 44,959 units in the Mexican market, according to INEGI data. Other automakers with significant presence in the national market followed: -General Motors: 32,420 units -Volkswagen: 22,057 units -Toyota: 19,785 units -KIA: 18,234 units

In the production indicator, General Motors ranked first during the January-February period. The company assembled 142,912 vehicles, the highest volume among automakers with operations in the country. Followed by: -Nissan: 82,329 units -Stellantis: 65,609 units
GM, Ford, and Nissan Dominate Exports
The external market continues to be the primary destination for vehicles assembled in the country. During the first bimester, General Motors led exports with 115,930 units. Followed by: -Ford Motor: 56,922 units -Nissan: 54,125 units The primary destination was the United States, which received 75.7% of the vehicles exported from Mexico.
BMW Stumbles in San Luis Potosí: Production Plunges Over 50%
INEGI’s report also registered variations in BMW’s indicators during the first bimester of the year. The brand’s sales reached 2,704 units, an annual variation of -8.2%. In production, the automaker located in San Luis Potosí registered 8,892 vehicles, representing a -52.2% variation compared to the same period of the previous year. Compared to other automakers, BMW recorded the worst performance during the reference period. Regarding exports, BMW dispatched 7,330 units from San Luis Potosí, with a variation of -37.4%.
