When Does the 2027 Electoral Process in Mexico Begin? INE Confirms Official Calendar

The 2027 electoral process now has a defined roadmap. The National Electoral Institute (INE) has approved the Comprehensive Plan and Official Calendar that will outline each stage leading up to the 2027 mid-term elections. These elections will see the entire Chamber of Deputies renewed and will concurrently coordinate local electoral processes in all 32 states of the country.

The electoral authority confirmed that the federal electoral process will formally commence on September 10, 2026. This date marks the starting point for one of the most significant elections of the current administration, as, in addition to organizing the federal elections, the institute will coordinate with the Local Public Electoral Bodies (OPLEs) for the renewal of 19,609 public offices across Mexico.

With a calendar comprising 505 activities, grouped into dozens of institutional procedures and processes, the INE aims to ensure that each phase of electoral organization is carried out with legal certainty, planning, and coordination. Furthermore, the approval of the calendar provides clarity for political parties, independent candidates, electoral officials, and citizens interested in participating as observers or poll workers. It also establishes the definitive dates for campaign development and the election day of June 6, 2027.

INE Kicks Off the 2027 Electoral Process

During the General Council session, the presiding councilor, Guadalupe Taddei Zavala, explained that the Comprehensive Plan serves as the tool that will enable the organization of all stages of the electoral process under criteria of certainty and transparency.

“A clear route to organize the federal election, by establishing activities, deadlines, responsible parties, and monitoring mechanisms that provide certainty to citizens regarding the actions taken in the state task of organizing elections,” stated the official.

The formal start of the process will occur on September 10, 2026, when the call for foreign visitors to register as electoral process observers will also begin. This registration will remain open until May 26, 2027, allowing international organizations and accredited visitors to monitor the development of the Mexican elections.

On the same day, the electoral observation mechanisms will also be officially activated, considered one of the fundamental instruments for strengthening citizen confidence in elections.

The calendar approved by the General Council not only includes activities related to voting but also the installation of electoral bodies, training, the formation of poll station boards, oversight, territorial logistics, candidate registration, and post-election day counts.

2027 Electoral Process Calendar

The official calendar outlines a sequence of activities that will extend for nearly a year. Key dates include:

September 10, 2026: Formal start of the federal electoral process.

October 5 to November 30, 2026: Registration of candidates for independent candidacies.

Plan with 505 Activities to Organize Elections

Beyond the dates visible to the public, the Comprehensive Plan approved by the INE functions as a technical document that coordinates all institutional work before, during, and after the election.

153 institutional procedures.
44 electoral organization processes.
Coordination between central INE departments and decentralized bodies.
Permanent monitoring of each stage through control mechanisms.

These actions encompass everything from logistics for setting up polling stations to the distribution of electoral materials, training of officials, oversight, territorial organization, IT systems, official counts, and post-election day activities. The objective is to ensure that the renewal of the 500 federal deputies—300 by relative majority and 200 by proportional representation—is conducted in accordance with the current constitutional and legal framework.

National Coordination to Renew Over 19,000 Public Offices

In addition to the federal process, the General Council approved the Comprehensive Plan and Coordination Calendars for the concurrent local electoral processes. These instruments will facilitate coordination between the INE and the Local Public Electoral Bodies in all 32 federal entities.

The strategy involves the renewal of 19,609 local offices through a scheme that defines responsibilities, execution timelines, and monitoring mechanisms between national and state authorities. Thus, the Comprehensive Plan establishes the overall coordination structure, while the calendars detail the specific activities each electoral authority must fulfill. This planning aims to avoid duplication, optimize resources, and ensure that all stages of the process proceed as scheduled.

Campaigns, Electoral Silence, and Election Day

One of the most closely watched periods by citizens will be the campaign season. According to the approved calendar, registered candidates will be able to commence their campaigning activities in April 2027 and must conclude them by June 2.

Subsequently, the period known as electoral silence will begin, covering June 3, 4, and 5. During these days, the dissemination of electoral propaganda is prohibited, allowing citizens time to reflect on their vote before heading to the polls.

Election day will take place on Sunday, June 6, 2027, when millions of Mexicans will elect the members of the Chamber of Deputies. Following this, district counts will commence, and subsequently, the allocation of proportional representation deputies will take place, a process concluding in August.
