2027 Elections: Which States Will See a Change in Governorship?

Mexico is heading towards a new electoral process that will have significant implications for the political landscape and public decision-making in the coming years. According to the National Electoral Institute (INE), the 2027 Electoral Day will take place on June 6th and will be concurrent, with federal and local elections. The process includes the renewal of over 20,000 elected positions, encompassing both federal and local offices. One of the main focal points will be the entities where the state Executive Branch will be renewed, as 17 governorships will be up for contention.

What’s at Stake in These Elections?

The 2027 elections will not be limited to the renewal of governorships. At the federal level, 500 seats in the Chamber of Deputies will be elected, with 300 corresponding to the first-past-the-post system and 200 to proportional representation.

At the local level, the INE indicates that 17 governorships will be renewed, in addition to 1,098 local deputations across 31 federal entities. This will be complemented by 18,057 positions in municipal governments and another 437 elected positions, including municipal board presidencies, syndic roles, and councilors.

Collectively, the June 6, 2027, election represents the renewal of 20,109 positions, according to figures presented by the INE itself. The scale of the process makes these elections one of the most significant electoral exercises in the current Mexican political cycle.

States Where Governorships Will Change

One of the central elements of the 2027 elections will be the renewal of 17 state governments. The INE establishes that in these entities, citizens will go to the polls to decide who will occupy the respective governorships.
