The Evolution of the Point of Sale: From Cash Register to Intelligent Business Hub

Every day, thousands of businesses process hundreds of transactions. However, very few leverage the most valuable asset they generate: data. While some businesses solely focus on processing payments, others convert each sale into valuable information to anticipate demand, optimize inventory, understand their customers, and make better decisions. This is the true evolution of the point of sale: it has transitioned from an operational tool to the business’s central intelligence.

Just a decade ago, the point of sale had a very clear function: to process payments. Today, it has become one of the primary generators of strategic information for any company.

According to a study by the Bank of Mexico, in 2024, 56.5% of all retail electronic transactions were made with cards, while card transactions (both wholesale and retail) grew 20.8% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, contactless payments surged from just 5.3 million transactions in 2022 to over 225 million by the end of 2024, reflecting the accelerated adoption of new payment methods.

However, the true value no longer lies solely in accepting digital payments, but in the information each transaction generates. A modern point of sale allows businesses to understand product turnover, profitability, demand, and preferred customer payment methods.

The figures show there is still a huge opportunity. A study by Mastercard and PCMI estimates that 73% of small businesses in Mexico still do not accept digital payments, while approximately 60% of daily spending continues to be done in cash. The Mexican retail sector is just entering its next phase.

Platforms that integrate payments, analytics, and services into a single ecosystem are beginning to emerge in Mexico, as seen with WaliApp. This reflects an evolution that goes beyond simple card acceptance, transforming the point of sale into a business management tool that allows for utility payments, airtime top-ups, and more, covering every customer need.

In the coming years, the competitive advantage will no longer be solely in selling more, but in understanding each sale better. This is because the point of sale has ceased to be a cash register and has become the intelligent hub of the business.
