Guanajuato Ranks Second Nationally for Wine Quality in Mexico
Guanajuato garners 52 international awards, solidifying its position as Mexico's second-leading wine-producing state.
Guanajuato, Second Most Awarded State in Mexico for Wine Quality
The wine industry continues to strengthen the economic and tourism development of the state. Guanajuato is consolidating itself as the second most awarded state for the quality of its wines, after obtaining 52 international recognitions and the award for Best Mexican Wine at the Brussels World Competition 2026. These results confirm the growth of an activity that drives investment, tourism, and international positioning for the entity.
Guanajuato Wines Shine at One of the World’s Most Important Competitions
During the Guanajuato Grape Harvest Festivals 2026, the Secretary of Tourism and Identity, Lupita Robles León, highlighted that the state is experiencing one of the best moments in its history.
The official emphasized that Guanajuato currently ranks second nationally in terms of international recognitions, a result of the joint effort between producers, winemakers, vineyards, and wineries. The recognition is particularly significant because the Brussels World Competition (CMB) is among the most prestigious events in the global wine industry.
52 International Awards Support the Quality of Guanajuato Wine
The 34th edition of the Brussels World Competition 2026 was held from May 21st to 23rd in Yerevan, Armenia, where Guanajuato wines obtained 52 recognitions, a figure that placed the state only behind Baja California. Among the awards achieved are:
- 2 Grand Gold Medals
- 12 Gold Medals
- 10 Silver Medals
- 27 CMB Merit recognitions
- 1 special recognition “Revelation Wine”
Furthermore, the wine Gran Pago Ricardo Vega 2021, produced by Cuna de Tierra, received the recognition as Best Mexican Wine, one of the most important distinctions a national label can achieve.
Guanajuato Surpasses States with Long Wine-Making Traditions
The national ranking of the Brussels World Competition was as follows:
- Baja California: 88 awards
- Guanajuato: 52 awards
- Coahuila: 47 awards
These results consolidate the sustained growth of Guanajuato’s wine industry and reflect the competitiveness its producers have achieved compared to states with a longer tradition in winemaking. Additionally, the obtained recognitions are in addition to the results from the international Bacchus 2026 competition, where Guanajuato won 26 medals, leading Mexican participation.
The Wine Industry Drives Tourism, Investment, and Regional Development
Currently, Guanajuato boasts an integrated industry with vineyards and wineries distributed across the state’s seven tourist regions, where wine has become a driver of economic development and job creation. The sector’s growth also strengthens wine tourism, an activity that attracts national and international visitors through vineyard tours, gastronomic experiences, festivals, and harvest seasons. Furthermore, the state strategy aims to increase producer competitiveness, diversify tourist offerings, and consolidate a distinct identity around wine made in Guanajuato.
Grape Harvests Strengthen the State’s National Leadership
The international recognition coincides with the start of the Guanajuato Grape Harvests 2026, a season that brings together activities at various vineyards across the state and promotes the entity’s gastronomic, cultural, and tourist richness. The state government is promoting the strengthening of the wine value chain as a strategic sector for attracting investment, generating well-being, and positioning Guanajuato among Mexico’s leading enological destinations. The results obtained in major international competitions show that the quality of Guanajuato wine maintains an upward trend and strengthens the state’s presence in specialized markets, where each recognition increases the prestige of an industry that continues to expand its national and international reach.
