Guanajuato Ranks in National Top 3 for Museums and Visitors
Guanajuato solidifies its cultural and tourism position, ranking in the national top 3 for museums and visitors in 2025, with over 2.4 million attendees.
Guanajuato Records 60 Museums and Over 2.4 Million Visitors
The 2025 Museums Statistics from INEGI reported that Guanajuato boasts 60 museums, a figure that places the state among those with the most extensive cultural infrastructure in the country.
Furthermore, Guanajuato’s cultural venues welcomed 2,114,973 visitors to exhibitions and an additional 342,364 attendees for complementary activities. The total attendance reached 2,457,337 visitors, equivalent to 4.71% of the national attendance recorded in Mexican museums during 2025. Only Mexico City and Nuevo León surpassed Guanajuato in the total number of visitors.
Cultural Tourism Strengthens State Economic Activity
Guanajuato’s performance confirmed the growth of cultural tourism as one of the state’s economic drivers. The influx of visitors to museums boosted activities related to hotels, restaurants, transportation, commerce, and tourist services in historical cities and heritage destinations.
Additionally, Guanajuato maintains a diversified cultural offering with historical, artistic, archaeological, and community museums distributed across various municipalities.
Nationally, Mexican museums recorded a combined attendance of 52.2 million people, an increase of 600,000 visitors compared to the previous year.
History and Art Dominate Mexico’s Museum Offerings
The INEGI report revealed that history-focused museums accounted for 44.4% of the national total. Meanwhile, art-dedicated spaces comprised 23.5%, and archaeological museums represented 20%. These profiles align with a significant portion of Guanajuato’s cultural offerings, particularly in municipalities such as Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, and Dolores Hidalgo. The state also concentrates venues linked to historical heritage, viceregal art, and contemporary cultural movements.
Museums Enhance Accessibility and Cultural Services
Nationally, 89.5% of museums offered guided tours, and 49.4% conducted artistic and cultural activities. Furthermore, 34.9% of venues had infrastructure for people with disabilities, and 33.5% provided Wi-Fi service for visitors. In terms of accessibility, 60.9% of museums integrated visual support tools for individuals with disabilities, and 20.2% implemented cognitive accessibility features. These conditions enhanced the cultural experience and broadened access to diverse audiences.
Young People and Those with Higher Education Lead Visits
The study also indicated that museums maintain a stronger presence among the young population and those with university education. 61.9% of visitors had higher education, while 25.4% had completed secondary education. Additionally, the age group with the highest attendance was individuals between 20 and 29 years old, for both men and women. On another note, 80.6% of attendees visited a museum for the first time within the last year, reflecting a constant renewal of cultural audiences.
General Culture and Learning Motivate Visits
Among the primary motivations for visiting museums were general culture (21.7%), learning (16.6%), and interest in exploring exhibitions (16.4%). Conversely, interviewees identified a lack of promotion and unfamiliarity with the cultural offerings as the main obstacles to increasing visits.
With these results, Guanajuato has solidified its position as one of the country’s leading cultural and tourist hubs, further cementing the role of its museums within the national cultural landscape.
