How Amazon Mexico Boosts Mexican SMEs: A Decade of History

Amazon Mexico celebrates 10 years, detailing its significant investment, job creation, and strategic support for Mexican SMEs, contributing to the nation's economic development.

In 2025, Amazon Mexico celebrates a decade of operations in the country, a period that has transformed how consumers shop, as well as how thousands of Mexican small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) sell, grow, and innovate. With over 145 billion pesos invested since its arrival in 2015, the company has reaffirmed its commitment to economic development, digitalization, and generating opportunities for national talent. Through its 2025 Economic Impact Report,

it shared the results of ten years of constant work in Mexico, a history marked by innovation, job creation, and the promotion of local entrepreneurship.

History of Amazon in Mexico

When Amazon.com.mx was launched in 2015, its purpose was: “Amazon is for everyone, every day, at any time.” Ten years later, that promise has materialized into a network of opportunities encompassing customers, employees, entrepreneurs, and entire communities.

“We have learned that growing together with Mexico means investing in innovation for customers, in our people, and in SMEs for the country’s economic development,” stated Pedro Huerta, Country Manager of Amazon Mexico. Since its arrival, the company has invested over 145 billion pesos and generated 52,000 direct and indirect jobs. In 2024 alone, its operations contributed over 29 billion pesos to the national GDP, reflecting its sustained impact on the Mexican economy. Amazon’s vision extends beyond e-commerce; it aims to create an ecosystem where innovation and inclusion drive growth.

How Amazon Mexico Drives Employment and Regional Development

Amazon’s story in Mexico is also one of employment, talent, and regional development. Currently, over 15,000 direct employees are part of its workforce, while its investments have generated over 37,000 indirect jobs in sectors such as logistics, technology, and e-commerce.

This operational network is supported by national infrastructure:

  • 14 fulfillment centers
  • 29 delivery stations
  • Rapid delivery services reaching 14 cities the same day and over 80 cities the next day.

In 2025, Amazon took a decisive step with the launch of the first Amazon Web Services (AWS) Region in Mexico, located in Querétaro. This facility transforms the country into a continental technology hub, capable of driving digital transformation not only for Mexico but for all of Latin America. The new AWS region accelerates innovation by offering local infrastructure for Mexican businesses and startups, boosting strategic sectors such as education, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing.

Mexican SMEs: The Heart of the Amazon Mexico Ecosystem

Amazon’s growth in Mexico would not be possible without the small and medium-sized enterprises that have found its platform to be a springboard for competing nationally and internationally. Currently, over 27,000 active Mexican sellers offer more than five million products through Amazon, with 99% being SMEs. In 2024 alone, these businesses generated 52,000 jobs and contributed 19.4 billion pesos to the national GDP.

To enhance their participation, Amazon has created specific programs for training, financing, and visibility. One of the most prominent is “Hecho en México” (Made in Mexico), an initiative developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, which aims to drive the digitalization, productive growth, and international projection of Mexican companies. Thanks to this program, over 80,000 products certified with the Hecho en México distinction are now sold on the platform, providing global visibility to national talent, quality, and creativity. It is noteworthy that the collaboration between Amazon and the Mexican Government has been key to integrating SMEs into the digital economy.

“With over 145 billion pesos invested, 52,000 jobs generated, and nearly 27,000 Mexican SMEs currently selling through its platform, Amazon demonstrates Mexico’s potential as a destination for investment, innovation, and talent,” stated Ximena Escobedo, Head of the Productive Development Unit at the Ministry of Economy.

Innovation and Sustainability: History and Future

Beyond its economic impact, Amazon Mexico seeks to promote sustainable and inclusive development. Its environmental and social responsibility programs drive projects for carbon footprint reduction, renewable energy, and digital education. One of the main objectives for the next decade is to achieve carbon-neutral operations and expand green infrastructure across all its logistics centers. Simultaneously, the company works on educational programs to train youth and entrepreneurs in digital skills, fostering a new generation of technological leaders. Amazon Mexico’s 2025 Economic Impact Report reflects a decade of sustained growth, but above all, a long-term vision focused on the development of people and communities. Its commitment to digitalization, innovation, and sustainability positions it as a key player in building the nation’s economic future.

“Growing together with Mexico is not just a goal; it is our way of giving back to a country that has allowed us to innovate, serve, and build a shared future,” asserted Pedro Huerta.
