Aguascalientes Establishes Mezcal and Agave Consultative Council to Boost Exports
The Government of Aguascalientes and mezcal producers have established the Consultative Council for Mezcal and Other Agave Derivatives. This body aims to fortify the production of this spirit, enhance its competitiveness, and expand its presence in both domestic and international markets.
The council’s creation seeks to coordinate strategies between authorities and producers to promote certification, elevate mezcal quality, and capitalize on the state’s Designation of Origin, which is considered a key tool for opening new export opportunities.
During the inauguration, Governor Tere Jiménez stated that the objective is to transform Aguascalientes’ mezcal into a product with a global footprint. “We don’t just want our mezcal to be sold here in Aguascalientes, but to be sold worldwide, so that we can show the world the excellent products the people of Aguascalientes know how to make,” she declared.
Currently, Aguascalientes has approximately 1,300 hectares of cultivated agave and another 700 hectares of wild agave, according to figures from the Secretariat of Rural and Agribusiness Development (Sedrae).
In this context, the state government reported that nearly 13 million pesos have been allocated during the current administration to strengthen the agave production chain through programs focused on certification, training, equipment, and commercial promotion.
The state administration also highlighted that two mezcal brands produced in Aguascalientes recently won medals at the Mundo Mezcal festival. These accolades are intended to underscore the quality of the product crafted in the state.
