Instances Where the World Cup Was Affected by Political and Security Conflicts
Explore the rare instances when the FIFA World Cup was directly impacted by political and security conflicts, from cancellations due to world wars to a host nation's withdrawal.
Throughout the history of the FIFA World Cup, political contexts and armed conflicts have, on rare occasions, impacted the staging of football’s most significant tournament. From cancellations due to world wars to a host nation’s withdrawal over internal issues, these episodes illustrate how the international environment can influence even the largest-scale sporting events.
World Cups Canceled Due to World War II
The only instances where the World Cup was not held were in the 1940s, attributed to the 20th century’s largest armed conflict.
The tournament scheduled for 1942 was canceled due to the ongoing Second World War, which rendered the organization and participation of national teams impossible amidst the global crisis.
The same situation recurred in 1946 when the aftermath of the conflict—which concluded in 1945—still precluded the logistics and necessary conditions required to host the championship.
These two cancellations represent the direct impact of an international conflict on the history of global football.
Colombia 1986: The Only Host to Withdraw
The sole instance where a host nation was withdrawn and reassigned occurred in the lead-up to the 1986 World Cup.
Colombia, originally designated as the host, withdrew its bid in 1982 due to economic difficulties, infrastructure challenges, and concerns related to the country’s internal security situation.
Given this scenario, FIFA decided to award the hosting rights to Mexico, which ultimately organized the tournament for the second time in its history.
Exceptional Impact on Tournament History
Despite political tensions that have surrounded various editions over the decades, these three episodes—two cancellations and one reassignment—are the only instances where the tournament’s organization has been directly impacted by conflicts or crises.
Since then, FIFA has maintained the championship’s continuity even in complex contexts, solidifying the World Cup as one of the most stable sporting events on the international calendar.
