Is San Luis Potosí Ready to Launch Direct Flights to Europe?
San Luis Potosí aims to expand air connectivity, including direct flights to Europe, to foster economic growth and reduce travel costs.
The National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (Canaco-Servytur) deemed it necessary to continue expanding San Luis Potosí’s air travel offerings, primarily to European countries, to respond to the state’s economic growth and contribute to reducing flight costs. This was stated by Fernando Díaz de León Hernández, president of the business organization, when referring to the local airport’s expansion plans. The business leader indicated that greater air connectivity is crucial to support the industrial, tourism, and services development recorded in the entity. Furthermore, he explained that increasing flight offerings creates a more competitive environment among airlines, which can directly lead to more accessible fares for users.
New Routes, Key to Reaching One Million Passengers
After the Ministry of Economic Development (Sedeco) set the goal of reaching one
during this year at Ponciano Arriaga International Airport, Díaz de León Hernández affirmed that this challenge largely depends on the opening of new air routes. In this regard, he acknowledged that flights to the United States were added last year, strengthening international connectivity.

and Monterrey, destinations that, he stated, are strategic for both tourism and the business activities of Potosinians.
Flights to Europe, an Option to Diversify San Luis Potosí’s Connectivity
In addition to national destinations, the Canaco-Servytur president considered it positive that San Luis Potosí could aspire, in the medium term, to direct flights to Europe. He pointed out that there are precedents in the region, such as an airline operating a Querétaro–Madrid route, which demonstrates the viability of these types of connections. From his perspective, having direct flights from San Luis Potosí to European countries like Spain or France would allow for market diversification, attract international visitors, and facilitate the mobility of businesspeople involved in foreign investments. He also emphasized that the air travel offering must remain aligned with the state’s economic growth and its international projection.
Flights to Europe Could Justify the High Cost of TUA in San Luis Potosí
Now, enabling direct flights to Europe could somehow “justify” the high cost that passengers pay for the Airport Use Fee (TUA) at San Luis Potosí International Airport, which will increase by 6.9% in 2026:
- 734.26 MXN pesos for domestic flights
- 1,169.40 MXN pesos for international flights Díaz de León Hernández warned that the increase in the TUA would impact the final price of tickets. He explained that this adjustment raises costs for passengers, which is why he reiterated the importance of having more airlines and routes as a mechanism to balance prices and expand travel options.
New Flights from San Luis Potosí Starting January 2026
In parallel, Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona announced that San Luis Potosí Airport will enable new direct flights and frequencies to:
- Monterrey (new)
- Guadalajara (new)
- Puebla (new)
- Chicago (new)
- Mexico City (AIFA) (new frequency) In addition to managing routes to Canada. According to the announcement, ticket sales will begin in late January 2026; for MTY and CDMX, the operating airline will be
