LatAm Urges Regional Unity Amidst Venezuela Conflict
Several Latin American countries and Spain reject military actions in Venezuela, calling for regional unity and a peaceful, Venezuelan-led resolution to the crisis.
Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Spain have rejected military actions executed in Venezuelan territory by the United States, while also calling for the maintenance of regional “unity.” In a statement issued by the Colombian Foreign Ministry and endorsed by the six countries, four key positions were outlined regarding the events in Venezuela on January 3, 2026. Firstly, they expressed “profound” concern and rejection of the military actions, which they considered to have been carried out unilaterally, as they contravene fundamental principles of international law, particularly the prohibition of the use and threat of force, as well as respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. “These actions constitute a dangerous precedent for peace, regional security, and endanger the civilian population,” they emphasized. Political Process Must Be Led by Venezuelans
The second point articulated by the six countries emphasizes that the situation in
must be resolved exclusively through peaceful means, via dialogue, negotiation, and respect for the will of the people, without external interference and in adherence to international law. “We reaffirm that only an inclusive political process, led by Venezuelans, can lead to a democratic, sustainable, and respectful solution for human dignity.” The third point endorsed reaffirms the character of
and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, built upon mutual respect, peaceful resolution of disputes, and non-intervention.
UN Called Upon to De-escalate Tensions
In this regard, the six countries called for “regional unity,” transcending political differences, in the face of any action that jeopardizes regional stability. “We urge the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Member States of relevant multilateral mechanisms to use their good offices to contribute to the de-escalation of tensions and the preservation of regional peace.” Finally, they expressed concern about any attempt at governmental control, administration, or external appropriation of natural or strategic resources. Such actions are deemed “incompatible” with international law and represent a threat to the political, economic, and social stability of the region. Furthermore, this Monday, January 5, during her morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated that the UN Security Council will meet today, where Mexico will reaffirm its stance against intervention and in favor of dialogue to resolve differences among nations.
