Nuevo León Ranks as Mexico's Third Largest Exporter
Nuevo León solidifies its position as Mexico's third-largest exporting state in Q2 2026, driven by strong manufacturing performance, particularly in electrical equipment and transportation.
Nuevo León: Mexico’s Third Exporting Giant
Nuevo León maintained its position as Mexico’s third-largest exporting state during the second quarter of 2026, with foreign sales totaling $18.53 billion USD, representing 9.5% of the country’s total export value.
According to the Quarterly Exports by Federal Entity (ETEF) figures from INEGI, this amount signified an annual growth of 25.5%, allowing the entity to sustain an expansion rate exceeding that of other major industrial hubs in the country.
This performance places Nuevo León behind Chihuahua, which registered $49.02 billion USD in exports, and Jalisco, with $23.58 billion USD. Collectively, the seven largest exporting states accounted for 73.5% of national exports, equivalent to $195.26 billion USD during the quarter.
Manufacturing Accounts for Nearly All of Nuevo León’s Foreign Trade
The manufacturing sector represented 99.7% of state exports, with a value of $18.48 billion USD. This concentration establishes manufacturing as Nuevo León’s primary link to international markets and reflects the significance of the
established in the state. Within this structure, three major branches stand out: transportation equipment; manufacturing of computer, communication, and electronic components; and manufacturing of electrical apparatus and equipment for generating and distributing electrical energy. This combination reveals that Nuevo León’s export profile is not dependent on a single industry but rather on diverse manufacturing activities integrated into national and international supply chains.
Electrical Equipment Positions Nuevo León Nationally
One of the entity’s primary export assets lies in subsector 335, which covers the manufacturing of electrical equipment and apparatus for generating, distributing, and controlling electrical energy. In the second quarter, Nuevo León recorded $2.79 billion USD in exports from this segment. This amount represented 29.3% of the national total, enough to place the state in the leading position nationwide for this subsector. This positioning is particularly relevant in a context where electrical infrastructure and components associated with electrification are becoming integral to increasingly expansive industrial chains. For Nuevo León, this specialization offers a significant platform within its manufacturing and industrial supply structure.
Automotive and Transportation Maintain Strategic Importance
Subsector 336, the manufacturing of transportation equipment, also holds a substantial share in Nuevo León’s foreign trade. The entity exported $5.44 billion USD in this segment during the second quarter of 2026, equivalent to 9.6% of the national exports for this subsector. With this result, Nuevo León ranked third nationally, trailing behind Coahuila and Guanajuato. This position reflects the state’s integration into chains related to the automotive and transportation industry, an activity that retains considerable weight within the manufacturing platform of northern Mexico. Coahuila accounted for 19.5% of national exports in this subsector, while Guanajuato contributed 13.1%, and Nuevo León 9.6%.
Electronics Complement the Industrial Profile
Another relevant component is subsector 334, associated with the manufacturing of computer, communication, measurement, and other electronic equipment and components. Nuevo León recorded $3.42 billion USD in exports within this category, equivalent to 4.9% of the national total. Although national leadership in this segment belongs to Chihuahua, with 53.5% of exports, and Jalisco holds the second position with 27.9%, Nuevo León’s participation confirms the entity’s presence in manufacturing activities with higher technological content. This contrast also highlights distinct specializations among the country’s leading exporting states. While Chihuahua concentrates a considerable proportion of its external sales in electronics, and Jalisco experienced a strong increase in the same subsector, Nuevo León presents a more diversified structure across electrical equipment, transportation, and electronics.
Nuevo León on the National Export Map
The principal exporting states during the second quarter exhibit differentiated profiles:
| State | Position | Exports, Billion USD | National Share | Annual Variation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chihuahua | 1st | 49,027.5 | 25.1% | 87.3% |
| Jalisco | 2nd | 23,585.1 | 12.1% | 130.8% |
| Nuevo León | 3rd | 18,533.5 | 9.5% | 25.5% |
| Coahuila | 4th | 17,967.5 | 9.2% | 6.0% |
| Baja California | 5th | 14,917.8 | 7.6% | 9.0% |
| Guanajuato | 6th | 10,163.2 | 5.2% | -0.3% |
| Tamaulipas | 7th | 9,362.6 | 4.8% | -2.8% |
The data underscore the significance of the northern and western industrial corridor within Mexico’s foreign trade. Chihuahua and Jalisco jointly accounted for 37.2% of national exports, while Nuevo León contributed another 9.5%. Furthermore, the entity maintained double-digit growth, albeit below the expansion recorded by Jalisco and Chihuahua. The entry
