San Luis Potosí Prepares New Public Transportation App: SCT Analyzing Data
The Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) in San Luis Potosí is developing a new app to improve public transit information for over 1.2 million residents.
Moving through a metropolitan area of over 1.2 million inhabitants like San Luis Potosí involves a public transportation network that requires precise information to function and, above all, to enable users to make informed decisions before and during their journeys. In this regard, the head of the Secretariat of Communications and Transport (SCT) in San Luis Potosí, Araceli Martínez Acosta, announced that, following the launch of the
, the department is preparing an application specifically focused on urban collective public transportation. She also stated that the project is still in the data collection and organization phase.
San Luis Potosí Metropolitan Area Demands Greater Public Transportation Control
The scale of the San Luis Potosí metropolitan area explains some of the need for tools that allow for better understanding and management of the collective public transportation system. It is noteworthy that the San Luis Potosí metropolitan area exceeds 1.2 million inhabitants, according to INEGI indices. Furthermore, urban growth has extended daily commutes between San Luis Potosí and Soledad de Graciano Sánchez, as well as to other municipalities functionally linked to the metropolis. In this scenario, transportation information goes beyond being a mere resource for consulting a route. It can also serve to:
- Identify routes
- Understand available services
- Organize transfers
- Improve operational oversight
The SCT itself maintains a registry of collective transportation vehicles in the metropolitan area, including information on units, license plates, economic numbers, color schemes, and model years. This dataset includes records for 2025.
What Information Will the New San Luis Potosí Public Transportation App Provide?
The application aims to offer users information that is currently dispersed across routes, stops, and different transportation services. According to Martínez Acosta, the platform plans to integrate:
- Transportation routes and lines
- Bus stop locations (parabuses)
- GPS monitoring
- Transfer options
- Mobility alternatives
It would also incorporate information on wait times and travel durations, elements that would allow users to more accurately plan their journeys before boarding a vehicle. The official explained that the SCT began collecting this data in 2025 and is currently working on finalizing the necessary information to develop the tool.
“We are already working on it. We started collecting all the information last year, and we are having a very intense year-end. We expect to close it out this year,” she stated.
The New App Could Also Facilitate Transfers
One of the elements announced by the SCT is the incorporation of mobility alternatives and transfer options. This component is relevant for a city where different urban transport modalities and routes require greater integration. Urban planning documents from the state had already identified the need to establish articulation points between various transportation modes to enhance connectivity and territorial accessibility. The new tool could consolidate this information in a single location so that users can understand the available alternatives to complete a journey.
GPS and Wait Times: The Challenge Will Be Turning Data into Useful Information
The integration of GPS opens another possibility, where the application will not be limited to displaying a static route but can offer information related to vehicle operations through:
- GPS monitoring
- Wait times
- Travel times
However, it has not yet been confirmed which features will be enabled from launch or under what system real-time data will be updated. The progress will largely depend on the department’s ability to consolidate homogeneous information on routes, units, stops, and operations.
When Will the New San Luis Potosí Public Transportation App Be Available?
As of now, the SCT has not announced a definitive launch date. The department’s stated goal is to complete information collection during 2026. If the process requires more time, the objective would be to conclude it during the first two months of 2027.
