Canada's Tariffs on US Goods Take Effect Today: What's the Impact on Mexico?

Canada implements retaliatory tariffs on US products, impacting trade dynamics and potentially creating opportunities and challenges for Mexico.

Canada is implementing new retaliatory tariffs on products originating from the United States today, Tuesday, September 8th, as a response to trade measures previously imposed by Washington. The new tariffs cover C$27.6 billion worth of goods and come as Canada, the United States, and Mexico maintain the active Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), whose joint review began in 2026 and remains in effect until 2036.

Why and What Will Canada Impose Tariffs On?

The Canadian government announced these new measures after the United States established a 50% tariff on C$27.6 billion of Canadian products, effective August 22nd. Ottawa has decided to respond by applying equivalent tariffs, dollar-for-dollar and rate-for-rate, on U.S. products affected by the U.S. tariffs under Sections 338 and 232.

The new Canadian tariffs will be 15%, 25%, and 50%, depending on the product and the corresponding U.S. tariff. The measure is concentrated on sectors considered strategic or particularly affected by Washington’s trade policies. These include steel and aluminum, dairy products, appliances, agricultural machinery, pulp and paper, plastics, and electronic products.

The decision comes at a significant moment for North America. CUSMA remains in effect, and the Canadian government has indicated that the agreement maintains access for companies from all three countries to regional markets. In July, Canada confirmed that the treaty remains in force until 2036, as governments move forward with its review.

How Do Canada’s Tariffs on the U.S. Impact Mexico?

Canada’s tariffs on the U.S. do indeed impact Mexico. While not directly, as only U.S. products will face higher costs, the impact is indirect. These tariffs can have both positive and negative effects on the Mexican economy.

Positive Impact

The main opportunity for Mexico lies in the potential for Canadian companies to seek alternative suppliers to the United States due to the increased costs caused by the tariffs. This could create openings for Mexican exporters of manufactured goods, machinery, agri-food products, electronics, plastics, and other commodities.

Official data from Global Affairs Canada shows that trade with Mexico is already dynamic. In July 2026, Canadian exports of goods to Mexico increased by 6.6% monthly and 22.8% year-to-date, while its imports from Mexico grew by 2.7% monthly and 17.3% year-to-date.

The current situation could also reinforce North American production integration and generate incentives for companies to seek production within the region. Mexico could benefit if it manages to capture a larger share of these supply chains.

Negative Impact

The primary risk is that a trade escalation between Canada and the United States could lead to the fragmentation of North American supply chains. Mexico maintains strong production integration with both markets, so higher barriers could increase costs, alter suppliers, and affect sectors such as automotive, electronics, and manufacturing.

Furthermore, U.S. products that lose competitiveness in Canada might seek other destinations, including Mexico. This could lead to increased competition for domestic producers.

In this regard, the impact of Canada’s tariffs on the United States on Mexico will be indirect and will depend on the duration and depth of the dispute. For the Mexican economy, the opportunity will be to gain market share in Canada without losing the advantages of being part of an integrated North American production chain.
