Governors' Reactions Following Federal Operation in Jalisco; Security Reinforced and Activities Suspended in Several States
Governors across Mexico responded to a federal operation in Jalisco with reinforced security measures and suspended activities in various states.
Governors from various states across the country issued statements and announced security measures following the federal operation conducted in Tapalpa, Jalisco, as reported by the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA), which resulted in blockades and various reactions from organized crime in several states.
According to the official communiqué, the operation was the result of central military intelligence efforts, the National Intelligence Center, and the Attorney General’s Office, with the participation of Mexican Army Special Forces, the Air Force, and the National Guard. During the action, military personnel repelled an armed aggression, resulting in deceased and detained members of the criminal group, in addition to the seizure of weaponry and vehicles.
SEDENA reported that the deployment of federal forces continues to reinforce security in Jalisco and neighboring states.
Federal Government Calls for Calm
President Claudia Sheinbaum reported at 3:22 PM that there is absolute coordination with state governments and that, despite the recorded incidents, activities are proceeding normally in most of the national territory.
She also acknowledged the work of the Mexican Army, National Guard, and the Security Cabinet, reiterating that efforts are permanently underway for the peace and security of the country.
Jalisco Suspends Classes and Mass Events
The Governor of Jalisco, Pablo Lemus, announced in the early afternoon the cancellation of in-person classes across the state and the suspension of mass events scheduled for Sunday, as a preventive measure.
He also stated that he maintains direct communication with federal security authorities to establish coordination protocols and acknowledged the work of federal forces, emphasizing that they will continue to work together to protect the population.
Michoacán Activates Operations and Suspends Classes
In Michoacán, Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla reported the establishment of the security council and the coordinated deployment of state and federal forces following blockades recorded at various points within the state.
He reported the clearance of access routes in the Jiquilpan region and announced the suspension of school activities at all levels for Monday, February 23rd, with the objective of safeguarding the educational community.
Colima Reports Blockades and Vehicle Fires
The Governor of Colima, Indira Vizcaíno, reported that, stemming from blockades recorded in Jalisco and Michoacán and on the borders with the state, she convened the State Coordination Council for Peace and Security Building to hold a permanent session.
She noted that in some areas of the state, alleged criminal groups set vehicles on fire and attempted to block communication routes, a situation that is already being addressed by law enforcement agencies.
She indicated that state authorities, in coordination with federal forces, are maintaining a deployment throughout the state to guarantee public safety and that information will be disseminated through official channels.
Querétaro Reinforces Coordination with Security Forces
The Government of Querétaro reported that Governor Mauricio Kuri held a meeting with commanders from the Army, National Guard, State Police, and the Attorney General’s Office to establish communication and operational lines to maintain calm within the state given the events recorded in other states.
Nayarit Secures State Borders
The Governor of Nayarit, Miguel Ángel Navarro, reported the reinforcement of surveillance and the securing of state borders, in addition to maintaining a permanent session of the State Council for Peace and Security Building.
He urged the population to remain at home and only heed official information.
Guanajuato Reports Material Damages and Containment Operations
In Guanajuato, Governor Libia Dennise reported that a permanent session of the Operational Intelligence Group has been maintained since early morning.
State authorities reported fires in commercial establishments in several municipalities, with no injured persons, though with material damages. Later, it was reported that the incidents were contained, with no casualties, clear highways, and the airport operating normally.
Puebla Reports Contained Incidents and Arrests
The Governor of Puebla, Alejandro Armenta, expressed recognition for the work of the federal Security Cabinet and noted that in the state, the recorded incidents were contained, with some arrests.
He indicated that the state security cabinet remains in permanent session and that ground and air operations continue to guarantee public tranquility.
Oaxaca Establishes Peace and Security Council
The Governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz, reported that the state maintains coordination and communication with federal institutions to preserve peace and security.
He detailed that he instructed the establishment of the peace and security building council, with the participation of the Ministry of National Defense, the Navy, the National Guard, the Attorney General’s Office, the state prosecutor’s office, the state police, and security forces from various levels of government.
Quintana Roo Maintains Permanent Security Session
The Governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, reported that this Sunday, a permanent session of the Security Council is being held, monitoring the actions and operations implemented to guarantee peace and tranquility in the state.
She noted that coordination among the three levels of government, institutional presence, and work on the ground continue closely to provide peace, order, and well-being to the population.
