Manufacturing Declines 1.2% Annually in June 2026, Slowing Industrial Growth in Mexico

Mexico’s manufacturing industry saw a 1.2% year-over-year decline in June 2026, based on seasonally adjusted figures. It was the sole component among the four major sectors of industrial activity to register decreases in both monthly and annual comparisons.

Compared to May, manufacturing industries decreased by 0.6%. Meanwhile, overall industrial activity managed to advance by 0.2% month-over-month and 0.8% compared to June 2025, according to the Monthly Industrial Activity Indicator (IMAI) published by INEGI.

This result contrasts with the performance of other industrial sectors: construction grew by 3.0% monthly, electricity, water, and gas generation and supply activities advanced by 0.9%, and mining increased by 0.6%.

Manufacturing, the Only Industrial Sector with an Annual Decline

The gap between sectors was even more pronounced in the comparison with June 2025. Mining recorded annual growth of 7.0%; construction, 4.2%; and electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as water and natural gas supply, advanced by 0.7%. In contrast, manufacturing industries decreased by 1.2% annually.

Thus, the 0.8% annual growth of Mexican industrial activity was sustained despite the negative performance of one of its main components.

Manufacturing Accumulates 1.1% Decline in the First Half

INEGI’s original figures reveal another pressure point for the sector. Although manufacturing production showed a slight 0.1% annual growth in June, it accumulated a 1.1% contraction between January and June 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.

This figure contrasts with the accumulated performance of mining, which grew 3.8% during the first semester, and construction, which advanced 2.1%. Overall industrial activity saw an accumulated variation of 0.0% between January and June, meaning it remained practically stagnant compared to the previous year.

Transportation Equipment, Textiles, and Electrical Appliances Pressure Manufacturing

Within manufacturing, several productive branches registered significant declines in June. The manufacturing of textile inputs and textile finishing fell by 7.2% annually, while the manufacturing of furniture, mattresses, and blinds decreased by 5.7%.

In turn, the manufacturing of accessories, electrical appliances, and electricity generation equipment fell by 5.4%, and the manufacturing of transportation equipment dropped by 3.0% annually. Declines were also observed in the manufacturing of non-metallic mineral products, with -3.9%; plastic and rubber industries, with -2.7%; petroleum and coal derivative products, with -2.2%; and apparel manufacturing, with -1.6%.

Which Manufacturing Branches Grew in June 2026?

The manufacturing performance, however, was not uniform. Among the activities with the highest annual increases, “other manufacturing industries” stood out with 6.7% growth, followed by the manufacturing of computer, communication, measurement equipment, and electronic components, with 5.8%.

The manufacturing of machinery and equipment increased by 5.5%, while the chemical industry grew by 5.3% annually. Nevertheless, several of these advances have not yet been sufficient to reverse the accumulated negative balance of the manufacturing sector during 2026.

Industrial Activity Grows, but Manufacturing Loses Ground

Overall, the Monthly Industrial Activity Indicator increased by 0.2% monthly in June and 0.8% annually, with seasonally adjusted figures. The index stood at 102.0 points, with a base of 2018=100.

Sectoral performance, however, highlights an uneven recovery: while construction and mining showed significant increases, manufacturing continued to lose ground.
