New San Luis Potosí–Matehuala Expressway: What Will Be the Travel Time to the Northern Border?
The new San Luis Potosí–Matehuala expressway will significantly cut travel time to the northern border, boosting logistics and connectivity with substantial private investment.
San Luis Potosí is advancing with a series of road projects aimed at reorganizing its role within the country’s logistical corridors. During a recent announcement, Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona highlighted the San Luis Potosí–Matehuala expressway, funded by private investment exceeding 22 billion pesos. The project will not only expand the road capacity of the Altiplano region but will also provide a direct connection to the Interserrana highway being built by the government of Nuevo León. With this link, San Luis Potosí will strengthen its northern outbound routes and, concurrently, facilitate the movement of goods and passengers in areas reliant on strategic border crossings.
The Interserrana: The Link Reconfiguring San Luis Potosí’s Access to the North
The governor noted that collaboration with his Nuevo León counterpart, Samuel García, will allow for the consolidation of a shared network with increased flow and improved routes for the productive sector. Furthermore, this connection promises to facilitate travel for users and fellow citizens who require faster routes with less congestion.
In parallel, other privately funded projects are progressing, such as the San Luis Potosí–Querétaro expressway, which will complement routes to the central region of the country. Additionally, the Moctezuma–Villa de Arista superhighway and the Ahualulco–Zacatecas highway section are being integrated, creating a continuous road circuit in the Altiplano region.
How Much Time Will the San Luis Potosí–Matehuala Expressway Cut from the Journey to the Northern Border?
With the connection between the San Luis–Matehuala expressway and the Interserrana, the journey to Nuevo Laredo, which currently takes approximately eight hours, will be reduced to less than five. Furthermore, the corridor will strengthen connectivity between the central region of the country and cities such as Monterrey, Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa, and Matamoros.
Within Nuevo León territory, the Interserrana highway will link municipalities such as Galeana, Rayones, Iturbide, Linares, and Montemorelos. In San Luis Potosí, the connection will occur via an interchange near Matehuala, where the state government is working in coordination with Nuevo León to ensure the project benefits the
and nearby regions.
