Nissan Commences A1 Plant Expansion in Aguascalientes

Nissan Mexicana breaks ground on a 120,000 sqm expansion of its A1 plant in Aguascalientes, integrating new production lines and pickup assembly to boost competitiveness and regional development.

This Tuesday morning, Nissan Mexicana broke ground on the expansion of its A1 plant in Aguascalientes, a 120,000 square meter project that incorporates new production lines and technologies. This expansion marks a significant shift in local operations: the introduction of pickup truck assembly in a complex historically dedicated to light vehicles.

In this regard, the Vice President of Manufacturing for Nissan Mexicana,

, stated that the expansion addresses the need to strengthen the company’s competitiveness in Mexico and its export capacity.

“In complicated times, in difficult times, we at Nissan can make that difference,” he affirmed. He explained that the reconversion of A1 opens up a productive space that was not previously envisioned. “Manufacturing pickups at this plant, which seemed almost impossible, is a very, very important thing, and that will open up another space that we cannot even imagine today.” Busquets also highlighted the arrival of specialized suppliers, including the frame manufacturer and paint companies, with the aim of improving material flows and reducing logistics costs.

“This will help us be more competitive,” he said. In recognition of the local workforce, he added that “Aguascalientes plants… are delivering supreme quality”, a standard that, he assured, is visible to customers themselves. Furthermore, the executive concluded by pointing to the continuity of the industrial process.

“For me, this project is already done; we now need to start thinking about the next one.”

For her part, Governor Tere Jiménez framed the expansion as an act that consolidates the more than four-decade relationship between the state and the automotive company. She recalled that the project will allow for the modernization of processes, the integration of new production lines, and the strengthening of Aguascalientes’ position as one of the world’s most prominent centers for automotive development and technology. Jiménez also announced a proposal to create a commission comprising Nissan, the State Government, and civil society to support the Japanese community residing in Aguascalientes and promote educational and cultural initiatives.

Finally, the state governor emphasized that the expansion represents a shared commitment to regional development. “Today we lay a stone that symbolizes future, trust, and unity,” she affirmed. In a message of political support, she added: “You will have an ally who does not know how to lose… here we must continue to be number one.”

At the time, the state’s Secretary of Economic Development, Esaú Garza de Vega, explained that the project is the result of close monitoring with the company within the framework of the ReNissan corporate reorganization. He recalled that he insisted the state should intervene to ensure its presence in the global strategy.

“We have to go to Japan, we have to propose… that Aguascalientes be the point where growth continues,” he said. Garza attributed the final decision to the state’s location, its connectivity, available infrastructure, and the performance of the local workforce. The official stated that the state government will continue to support the project and the company.

“We will continue supporting Nissan, we will continue growing together,” he noted. In his message, he also highlighted the commitment of the workforce: “It is impressive… the speed, creativity, and above all, the dedication” of the workers.

Although investment figures or execution timelines were not disclosed during the event, both the company and the state government agreed that the A1 expansion reinforces Aguascalientes’ industrial position and sustains its role within Nissan’s operational strategy in Mexico.
