Tension Escalates Between the United States and Venezuela: Sheinbaum's Call for Action

Escalating US-Venezuela tensions after Trump's oil blockade and Maduro's piracy claims, prompting Mexican President Sheinbaum to urge UN intervention.

Tension between the United States and Venezuela escalated this Tuesday following a decision announced by US President Donald Trump, which reconfigures the regional geopolitical landscape and triggers diplomatic alerts across Latin America. According to reports, Trump ordered the total blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela. This measure aligns with the designation of Nicolás Maduro’s government as a “terrorist organization,” according to the official narrative from Washington.

Military Warnings and Control of Energy Assets

Through his Truth Social network, Trump accused the Venezuelan regime of using energy resources to finance criminal activities, such as narcoterrorism, human trafficking, and kidnapping. Within this framework, he justified the action as a national security strategy. The US president stated that his country would not allow a “hostile regime” to maintain control of assets that, in his view, were stolen or must be returned. His discourse included a military warning. “Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Navy ever assembled in the history of South America,” Trump declared. He added that pressure would increase until “all oil, lands, and other assets” are recovered.

Venezuela Responds to the United States

The Venezuelan government’s reaction was swift. Nicolás Maduro described the actions of

as acts of “piracy” and denounced a direct aggression against his country’s commercial sovereignty. During a congress broadcast on state television, Maduro called on oil and gas sector workers to organize a permanent international mobilization in defense of free trade. The Venezuelan president maintained that the confiscation of an oil tanker on December 10 represents a modern form of “privateering”. According to his argument, it is an illegal practice with political backing. Maduro asserted that defending Venezuelan trade is equivalent to defending peace in the Caribbean and worldwide. With this, he sought to shift the conflict to the international and multilateral arena.

Mexico Calls on the UN

In this context, Mexico’s stance gained diplomatic relevance. President Claudia Sheinbaum articulated a clear position regarding the escalating tension between the United States and Venezuela. From Palacio Nacional, Sheinbaum urged the United Nations to assume an active role in preventing potential bloodshed. Her call focused on conflict containment. “Beyond opinions about Venezuela’s regime or Maduro’s presidency, Mexico’s position must always be against intervention,” stated the president. Likewise, Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexico maintains a foreign policy based on historical principles, including: -Non-intervention -Non-foreign interference -Self-determination of peoples -Peaceful resolution of disputes Furthermore, the president emphasized that, in international disputes, Mexico prioritizes dialogue and diplomacy over the use of force. She stressed that unilateral actions exacerbate conflicts. “We call for any international controversy to be resolved through dialogue and peace, and not through intervention,” she affirmed. Sheinbaum drew particular attention to the multilateral system and the UN’s political responsibility. She noted that its actions have not been visible in the face of the recent escalation. “In this instance, it has not been seen,” she stated, referring to the international body’s role. President Sheinbaum’s statements come at a time of high regional sensitivity, where energy decisions, sanctions, and the use of military force are reconfiguring political balances. Mexico, under Sheinbaum’s leadership, seeks to maintain a position of diplomatic containment, appealing to international mechanisms to prevent the confrontation between the United States and Venezuela from escalating into a larger-scale conflict.
