Trump reappears in the media this Monday, nothing more and nothing less than to send letters to different countries, in which he sets the percentage of tariffs that they must pay as of August 1, 2025, all in case of not reaching a trade agreement with his country. The proposal (or warning?) is already on the table; the first affected are Japan and South Korea, with tariffs of 25%. Trump Sends the First Letters to Countries That Could Perceive New Tariffs in August1245
In this sense, a day after the US government reported that it would send letters to different nations setting the tariff rate that they must cover in case of not reaching an agreement, Trump posted on his network, Truth Social, the letters sent to Japan and South Korea. In both, Trump complains that relations “are far from reciprocal” and the “significant trade deficit” that the United States has with those nations, so they are most likely the first nations that will have to cover the tariff rate. Also, Trump warned through the directed text, that “if for any reason they decide to increase their tariffs, the amount they decide to increase will be added to the 25% that we charge them”. Under this scenario, the deadline for the entry into force of Trump’s tariffs, for both countries and very likely for a few more, was extended to August 1. However, the letters have begun to be sent, in order to pressure nations to reach an agreement.
