Tsunami Drill in Puerto Vallarta: When it will be and what to expect

Puerto Vallarta conducts major tsunami drill on November 4th at 10:00 AM, testing emergency response, alert systems, and evacuation protocols.

Puerto Vallarta initiates a significant prevention exercise. The threat of a Tsunami demands maximum readiness from its tourism and business infrastructure. This exercise, part of the activities in commemoration of World Tsunami Awareness Day, aims to strengthen public response capability to a natural disaster. Although the drill will be carried out mostly by local and state authorities, , particularly from the hotel and tourism sectors, is key. “It is essential that the population and visitors actively participate, as in emergency situations, every second counts,” stated Commander Misael López Muro, Director of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Puerto Vallarta.

Additionally, the activity will include the review of evacuation signage and the reinforcement of established assembly points to guide people to safe zones. Active participation from all sectors will contribute to the success of the exercise and preparedness for an actual tsunami. The State Alert System will be activated to issue test messages through 27 speakers distributed along the Jalisco coast.

The participation of the hotel sector is crucial in this type of civil protection operation. In previous drills, 350 establishments and over 30,000 individuals participated, according to data documented by the Navy. During this event, citizens must follow established emergency protocols to simulate a tsunami evacuation, with the support of local and federal authorities.

The drill exercise will take place on November 4th at 10:00 a.m., and will have four phases, in which the speakers will broadcast messages with clear instructions:

Second message: An active tsunami risk alert will be issued, requesting evacuation to safe zones.

Commander Sergio Ramírez López, General Director of the State Unit of Civil Protection of Jalisco, highlighted that this exercise seeks to test coordination mechanisms between authorities and coastal communities, ensuring a timely response to any emergency situation.
