2026 Calendar: All Long Weekends and Public Holidays in Mexico

The 2026 calendar is set to be particularly favorable for workers in Mexico. Unlike previous years, the placement of official holidays will create two additional long weekends, expanding leisure opportunities without affecting regular work schedules. This scenario stems from the weekly distribution of key dates such as Labor Day and Christmas, which will both fall on a Friday in 2026. According to the Federal Labor Law (LFT), mandatory holidays apply to the entire workforce across the country, in both public and private sectors, unless specific agreements provide for additional compensation. Take note of the mandatory rest days, long weekends, vacation periods, and school breaks in Mexico’s 2026 calendar.

Can Employees Work on Public Holidays?

Yes. The LFT permits mandatory rest days to be worked by prior agreement between the employer and employee. In such cases, the employee is entitled to receive: -Normal daily wage, plus -An additional double wage, known as triple pay Failure to comply with this compensation can result in fines ranging from 5,187 to 518,700 pesos, applicable per affected employee.

2026 Calendar: Mandatory Rest Days in Mexico

Thus, current labor legislation in Mexico establishes seven mandatory rest days for 2026. Some of these are moved to Monday to create long weekends: -Thursday, January 1 – New Year’s Day -Monday, February 2 – Anniversary of the Constitution (February 5) | First long weekend of the year -Monday, March 16 – Birthday of Benito Juárez (March 21) | Long Weekend -Friday, May 1 – Labor Day | Long Weekend -Wednesday, September 16 – Mexico’s Independence Day -Monday, November 16 – Mexican Revolution (November 20) | Long Weekend -Friday, December 25 – Christmas | Long Weekend Thanks to May 1 and December 25 falling on a Friday, the calendar totals five official long weekends, exceeding the usual three.

When Are School Vacation Periods in Mexico for 2026?

For its part, the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) marks the vacation periods for basic education students in the 2025-2026 school calendar: -Return to classes: Monday, January 12 -Easter Week Vacations: Monday, March 30 to Friday, April 10 -Summer Vacations: Starting Monday, July 20 (school year ends Wednesday, July 15) and lasting until the end of August.

Non-Official Public Holidays in Mexico 2026

Other holidays that are granted as rest days in some places but are not official on the calendar include the following: -Easter Week: Holy Thursday in 2026 falls on April 2, and the following day (April 3) is Good Friday. -Flag Day: Tuesday, February 24. -Teachers’ Day: Friday, May 15. -FIFA World Cup: In some locations, Thursday, June 11, is expected to be granted as a rest day for the inauguration of the FIFA World Cup, with the first match taking place at Estadio Azteca. It has already been officially announced as a holiday in Mexico City. -Day of the Dead: Monday, November 2, marks the Day of the Dead, so many places might offer a long weekend for its celebration. -“Day of the Race”: Monday, October 12. -Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe: For 2026, it is probable that no rest day will be granted for this date, as December 12 falls on a Saturday.

Additionally, due to the monthly meeting of the School Technical Council, these will also be non-school days for basic education: -January 30 -February 27 -March 27 -May 29 -June 26

Will There Be New Public Holidays in 2026?

Over the past few years, the Congress of the Union has received initiatives to expand the number of mandatory public holidays. However, none have been successful so far. The possibility of declaring Thursday, June 11, a non-working day, the tentative date for the inauguration of the 2026 World Cup, also remains under analysis, although there is no official confirmation.
