Aguascalientes Lags National Average in Artificial Intelligence Adoption, Study Reveals

In Aguascalientes, 6.5% of companies with 10 or more employees utilize artificial intelligence, a proportion lower than the national average of 8%, according to the study Artificial Intelligence in Mexico: From Promise to Economic Impact, prepared by Centro México Digital using data from INEGI’s 2024 Economic Census.

The difference compared to the national average is 1.5 percentage points. The study also shows that the adoption of this technology varies across federal states, with most registering levels between 6% and 8%. Among the states in the region, Aguascalientes presents the lowest percentage. Jalisco and Querétaro register 8%; Guanajuato, 6.9%; Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí, 6.8%; while Aguascalientes is at 6.5%, according to the state map included in the study.

Nationally, Nuevo León leads in artificial intelligence adoption among companies with 10 or more employees, with 12.6%. It is followed by Tamaulipas, with 9.9%; Mexico City, with 9.4%; and Quintana Roo, with 9.3%. The lowest percentages correspond to Chiapas, with 5.3%; Baja California Sur, with 5.6%; and Nayarit, also with 5.6%.

Company size marks another difference. In Mexico, 6% of small businesses use AI, compared to 14% of medium-sized businesses and 17% of large businesses. Among microenterprises, the proportion is a mere 0.1%. The document points out that 95% of the country’s economic units are microenterprises. In this segment, between 22% and 24% have computer equipment or internet access.

The analysis also finds an association between the use of artificial intelligence and certain economic indicators. A 10 percentage point increase in adoption is related to 5.2% more gross production and 3.8% higher worker remuneration. However, the study itself specifies that these results do not establish a causal relationship. Given the cross-sectional data, it is not possible to determine whether AI directly generates these results or if companies with better conditions have a greater capacity to adopt it.
