San Luis Potosí Suburban Train to Streamline North-to-Industrial Zone Commutes in the Capital

San Luis Potosí Suburban Train to Streamline North-to-Industrial Zone Commutes in the Capital

A new suburban train project in San Luis Potosí aims to reduce travel time and costs for commuters traveling from the northern and central areas to the state's industrial zone.

The suburban train in San Luis Potosí will offer a new transportation option for a significant number of users in the metropolitan area who commute daily from the north and center to the state’s industrial zone, thereby reducing travel costs and time. In this regard, Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona stated that the initiative formally began with the environmental consultation and route planning. He also mentioned that the project further includes complementary infrastructure to serve both regional travel and daily commutes within the metropolitan area.

Querétaro-San Luis Potosí Train Involves MXN 77 Billion Investment

It is noteworthy that the Querétaro–San Luis Potosí–Saltillo passenger train project involves an estimated investment of 77 billion pesos. This infrastructure aims to enhance rail connectivity between the central and northern regions of the country. For San Luis Potosí, this would represent a new transportation alternative for those traveling to other cities and municipalities. The project also intends to generate benefits for the

of the connected regions.

Six Municipalities to Host Passenger Train Stations in San Luis Potosí

Following the latest project update, the planned passenger train route in San Luis Potosí includes strategic stations in the municipalities of:

  • Villa de Reyes
  • San Luis Potosí
  • Moctezuma
  • Venado
  • Charcas
  • Real de Catorce

Furthermore, the technical feasibility of incorporating an additional terminal in Santa María del Río is currently under analysis. This expansion would allow for broader project coverage and bring rail service closer to more regions within the state. However, as construction studies progress, the locations and number of stations may be subject to modification.

Trains to Reach Speeds of Up to 200 km/h

The regional passenger service units will be capable of reaching a maximum speed of 200 kilometers per hour. This feature will significantly reduce travel times between different points on the route and offer an additional alternative to road travel. The service will connect San Luis Potosí with Querétaro and Saltillo, in addition to featuring stations within the state.

San Luis Potosí Suburban Train: Free and With Three Stations

In addition to the regional service, the state government is planning a free metropolitan suburban train system that will leverage the regional train’s infrastructure. Its purpose will be to facilitate daily commutes within the metropolitan area, specifically from the north to the industrial zone. For this, connections are planned with three strategic points:

  • Industrial Zone Station
  • TTP Bus Terminal
  • Tangamanga Park II

The proposal primarily aims to ease commutes for workers who travel daily between different parts of the city. Thus, the suburban service will serve a different function than the long-distance regional train, utilizing distinct train models and offering free service.

Connection to the Industrial Zone Will Be a Key Focus

The suburban infrastructure intends to improve commutes to one of San Luis Potosí’s main production areas. The project plans to connect the industrial zone with other points in the capital through daily routes. This will expand transportation alternatives for workers and users currently reliant on other modes of mobility. In turn, the rail connection could complement existing public transport and facilitate travel to other city locations.

Construction is in the Planning Stage

The project must still progress through various stages before its construction and operation can be finalized. Currently, work related to environmental consultation and route planning is underway, while state and federal governments maintain coordination to expedite procedures. The state administration indicated its goal for the rail infrastructure to be completed during the current gubernatorial term. Gallardo Cardona estimates that construction will commence by the end of the year or in early 2027.
