Mobile Phone Line Registration: How Many Numbers Can an Individual Register?
Mexico implements mandatory mobile phone line registration, linking numbers to CURP. This article details registration requirements, data storage, and the maximum number of lines an individual can register, along with exceptions for businesses.
Since January 9, 2026, Mexico will mandatorily implement the registration of mobile phone lines, a mechanism that requires associating each active number with the Unique Population Registry Key (CURP) and a valid official identification. This provision stems from the guidelines issued by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) and aims to reduce crimes committed through unidentified calls and messages. Furthermore, it is being implemented in a context where anonymous chip activation has enabled practices such as extortion, fraud, and identity theft, according to Federal Government data. With the entry into force of the new scheme, operators like Telcel have enabled digital and in-person platforms for users to complete the process. However, this process has raised one of the main questions among the population: how many lines can one person register under the same CURP, and what happens if this limit is exceeded? Here is everything you need to know. You might be interested in
What is the Mobile Phone Line Registry?
The CRT clarified that the mandatory registration does not apply to devices, but rather to active
. Similarly, it emphasized that the obligation falls on the SIM card or eSIM, also known as the Subscriber Identity Module. In other words, this is the component that identifies the user within the mobile network and enables calls, messages, and data access. Furthermore, individuals who acquired their number before January 9, 2026, have 120 business days to complete the enrollment. For new lines, registration is carried out at the time of activation, without exception.
What Data Will Telecommunication Companies Store?
In both scenarios, the user must present an official identification and CURP; this information remains under the safeguard of telecommunication companies, with confidentiality schemes similar to those already in place for postpaid plans. The data that operators may retain is clearly defined in the official guidelines. This includes:
- Full name or business name
- CURP or RFC
- Phone number
- Type of identification presented
- The result of the identity validation The CRT stipulated that this information must be protected through administrative, technical, and physical measures. Also read
How Many Numbers Can One Person Have?
One of the central points of the new mobile phone line registry is the maximum number of lines an individual can register. According to Article 10 of the guidelines published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, each individual can register up to ten mobile lines associated with the same CURP. This limit applies to both existing and new lines, regardless of whether they are physical SIMs or eSIMs. However, the authority clarified that this cap does not apply to legal entities or individuals with business activities, who may register more lines provided there is a justification linked to their commercial operation.
What Happens If the Maximum Number of Registered Lines is Reached?
When an individual reaches ten registered lines, operators cannot activate new numbers associated with that CURP. The restriction remains until there is a voluntary deregistration of a line, a change in tax regime, or a documented justification, in accordance with the current guidelines. This control aims to balance public safety and personal data protection, while introducing a new standard in mobile service administration. Authorities indicated that the scheme is part of a broader identification strategy, without creating a centralized registry held by the government. You can also read The post
